Doria Roberts played a free, private show yesterday at Urban Cannibals, and both the performance and food were great!
The crowd consisted mainly of Doria's Kickstarter supporters — a major source of funding for her new album, Blackeyed Susan — Urban Cannibals regulars, friends and media pro's such as Liz Lapidus, and CL's own contributor Jonathan Williams.
There was folk art (visual and musical) royalty in the room, too, with Lonnie Holley coming out to support Doria and hear a song she wrote with him in mind, singing it first and to the accompaniment of the audience's handclaps.
The remaining three or so songs were accompanied by cello and Doria's guitar, and as usual, "Perfect" brought tears to my eyes. Her rich voice and painfully relatable lyrics are what makes her such an attention-worthy artist.
Doria is one of those vocalists and songwriters that folks will call an "overnight sensation" without realizing she's been in the game for more than a decade.
Check out Urban Cannibals when you get a chance, and look for Doria's album, a tribute to singer Odetta, which drops Sept. 20.

Wondering where some of the CL crew will be tonight? At a couple of events sponsored by our partners, of course!
The Peachtree Village International Film Festival continues tonight, and is hosting a bevy of activities with the theme "Black Hollywood Weekend." Tonight, there's a super exclusive party with music by DJ Tron. While the location is being kept secret until tickets are purchased, we'll throw you a hint: It's at a new lounge on Edgewood Avenue.
Our friends at Good Day Atlanta on Fox5 got to meet Melanie yesterday, and here's Gurvir Dhindsa's interview with the best dancing pixie on the planet. Yes, I'm totes jealous that she didn't stop by here on her hometown tour, but whatevs. I still heart her.
CL's own Arts Critic Curt Holman will be joking along with the audience for tonight's edition of Cineprov! The featured film is The Rocketeer.
The bar opens at 7, there's popcorn — and there's sure to be laughs because Curt is a funny guy, so get there early, or get in touch with Relapse to reserve your seat.
$10. 8 p.m. Relapse Theater, 380 14th St. 404-246-3805.
Every week, our Distribution Manager Virgil Claritt takes these calls and emails and checks to make sure the papers make it to these "new stops," as we call them.
Look here weekly for new stops we've added. And don't hesitate to contact Virgil at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have questions about where to find a paper, want it delivered to your business, or want to report a problem (box or rack constantly empty, in bad shape, etc.).
