Consumer Culture

Consumer Culture

In many ways, Atlanta is a shopper’s dream. It’s the only city in eight Southern states to be deemed a shopping destination by Lucky magazine. Atlantic Station quickly has become a must-visit mecca for materialists. Buzz-worthy newcomers such as Jimmy Choo, Y-3, Intermix and IKEA are inching the city ever closer toward its aspiration to be the New York of the South.

But what about being Atlanta? Amid the hype surrounding the influx of nationally recognized boutiques and superstores, there’s something conspicuously missing in most of the city’s shopping districts: an appreciation for the homegrown.

So we’ve honed in, honoring the independent streak running through retail districts such as Virginia-Highland and shops such as Beehive Co-Op. We’re spreading the love for time-warp-inducing mom-and-pops, such as Smyrna’s Oakdale Ace Hardware. And we’re saluting the perseverance of the little guys, such as longtime barbershop owner and Holocaust survivor Eli Sotto.

Because believe it or not, there is such a thing as authentic consumerism.
