Re: “Residents, preservationists facepalm over Engineer's Bookstore demolition plan

Not so fast Vox. The midtown neighbors were able to force Georgia Tech to leave the front of the historic Crum and Forster building intact, and build their proposed tower around it.

As someone who claims to live or work around Midtown, you should know that the boom that is going on there is not just due to sheer dumb luck. In particular, at some point it was mandated that new towers should have ground level retail, which has had a tremendous impact on street life.

The main problem, as has been pointed out, is outdated zoning laws which are anti urban and tie neighbor's hands. Once these get changed, as it appears that they will, then things will continue to improve even more.

Re: “Residents, preservationists facepalm over Engineer's Bookstore demolition plan

Midtown Alliance is arguably the most powerful neighborhood association in the city, and even their concerns fell on deaf ears when it came to development, bars/nightclubs etc.

(Getting Fuqua to 'agree' to build even more alongside the big-box retailer on the beltline property he owned showed me just how powerless neighborhood associations are presently)

Good to know that you were not always as negative and cynical as you are today. Now I suppose you can go troll someone else as I do not have time to reply to any more of your comments.

Re: “Democratic National Convention Day 1: Greetings, Philadelphia

Some great speeches by the heavy hitters on the progressive side of the platform (Booker, Michelle Obama, Warren, Sanders), but I still think it is going to be a struggle to get HRC's net favorable numbers up.
She simply hasn't been a likable person throughout her political career, and is extremely fortunate to be running against Trump or the election wouldn't even be close (and vice-versa).

WJClintons speech tonight and the reception it gets should interesting.

@ atlantan109
Came up dry, didn't you?
Don't bother lecturing me about the Stone Mountain Freeway as I was living off Ponce then and was involved with the protests. But that protest was against the State Highway Department (now GDOT), not the City. And it took 20 years to come to a final resolution.

Re: “College Park mayor threatens retribution if newspaper publishes unflattering story

There are two swanky Indigo Hotels in Atlanta - one is at the Fox theater and the other one is next to the College Park MARTA station. Maybe they know something that you don't.

The problem is pretending some of our neighbors do not exist by failing to acknowledge them.

Look, if you make an official looking neighborhood page of a historic black neighborhood, but only feature a few uncredited murals and a lot of white hands holding up ice cream & things - you might get called out on it.

Re: “Residents, preservationists facepalm over Engineer's Bookstore demolition plan

Neighborhood associations have accomplished a great deal since the people of Virgina Highland managed to stop the so called Freedom Parkway from ripping through what are now some of the most desirable intown neighborhoods. If it was not for the hard work of such people there would not have been much of a city left to speak of today.

Re: “First Slice 7/26/16: AHA approves $150 million mixed-use development for former Herndon Homes site

funny no complaints about how Atlanta is represented in a myriad of TV shows (from Tyler Perry to multiple trash/reality TV), as being overwhelmingly black?
How about the Hartsfield mural which hardly represented the real demographics of the city?

There are bigger issues than what someone helpful is trying to put on an instragram account. (If you read through it, she seems very civil and considerate). By the looks of it, it is run by some youngish girl who hangs out with hipsters. If it is being done by an official organization then I stand corrected... otherwise pointless divisiveness.

I guess it is easier to gripe versus actually bettering the neighborhood after years of abuse.

Re: “Pricey Atlanta state House race attracts more than $400k

So Brown showing up at events forgives her horrendous, factually wrong and gutter-level smear-tactic campaign literature?

Brown apparently didn't know that the "Georgia Power" donation that she accused Dreyer of lying about came from his friend, neighbor and colleague on the Grant Park Conservancy Board? Dreyer is the outgoing GPC leader, the donation came from the incoming GPC leader. Brown is clueless about this? Why, if she's so "engaged" in our neighborhoods?

BTW, knocks on our door over the past months: Dreyer = 3, Brown = 0

I enjoy making fun of the gentrifying hipsters in O4W as much as anyone.

"The account features a colorful abundance of street art, businesses, shops, and overwhelmingly white residents indulging in the culture of the historic neighborhood."

Does anyone remember O4W culture from the 1990's?

Ah, the Pizza Hut and Strawberry Kiwi MD 20/20 from Chevron on the way to foam night at the Masquerade!
