Re: “Pantheon of Divini-TEASE, a Hearts A'blaze Valentines Day Burlesque Revue

Just wanted to stop in a leave a review for anyone whose interested in seeing this or other Hearts Ablaze productions in the future, since it isn't your traditional burlesque show. First, let me start by saying that Talloolah Love and Persephone Phoenix should be commended for putting on a burlesque performance that is high on artistic merit and entertainment value. From the bold, eye-catching costumes, to the unique Mythological theme and backstory, to the top-notch choreography, this is a well-produced show that is smoothly executed: a testament to the clear dedication of the producers and performers.

Burlesque is a unique mix of artistry and sexuality, and in many cases if the show lacks something it's the former. Definitely not the case here, as I've hopefully made abundantly clear. However when it comes to the question of whether this show will stimulate you in a more intimate way, that will depend heavily on your personal preferences. Let's just go ahead and get this out there: this is a plus-sized burlesque show that clearly aims to make a statement about positive body image, and redefine traditional attitudes on what sexy means. You won't find any svelte model-types here. This is a troupe of big, bold, beautiful women who put it ALL out there, and do it with style. When the costumes start peeling away and the performers command the stage in nothing but glittering g-strings and pasties, very little is left to the imagination. Whether or not that's something that will get your blood pumping is really up to you.

Re: “Historic College Park Arts Festival

Nice community arts festival that our family looks forward to each year. I like eclectic group of artists they usually have, with many you typically don't see at some of the larger arts festivals. Food is good. Music is fun and inviting. Plenty of things to do for kids.

Re: “Tuck Everlasting

If you've read Tuck Everlasting, you may think that it might be difficult to translate into musical form, and you'd be correct. With its heavy themes and enough sadness to spread around several times over, finding the right note and tone for a family musical is a hefty challenge. Fortunately, the creators, director, choreographer and performers are up to that challenge, even if it takes a few minutes to find a groove.

The second act is stronger than the first, but this is a musical that gets stronger once you've made it past the opening number. Tuck doesn't necessarily stumble right out of the gate, but its use of swirling dancing pairs to create the flashbacks in time is perhaps a little bit confusing. Audiences catch on soon enough, but right out of the gate, it's a bit muddled. I couldn't decide whether it was the choreography or the opening number itself, but ultimately decided the latter. It's just not an interesting enough, or memorable enough, number to start things off. But all is well by the time we've met Winnie Foster, and the reason to flock to the Alliance is squarely on the shoulders of the young, but extraordinarily talented Sarah Charles Lewis. To be so young, but to sing with such control and volume with a clarity that ensures you will understand the lyrics, is nothing short of amazing. And she has the acting chops to carry the show. Make no mistake, this is her musical.

Andrew Keenan-Bolger, Broadway chiseled, brings youthful exuberance to the role of Jesse Tuck. He does all he's asked to do, which is stay 17, despite having to stay 17 for almost 100 years. Best of all, he shines in his scenes with Lewis, without making Jesse creepy or inappropriate.

Another Broadway force, Carolee Carmello, gives a lovely performance as mother of the Tuck brood. Her voice sails and stirs with the emotion the part calls for, and she solidifies her self as the glue that holds the entire musical together.

Audiences may be delighted with Terrence Mann's "Man in the Yellow Suit," which actually shares elements with his recent turn as King Charlemagne in Broadway's Pippin. It would appear Mann is having a great deal of fun in a wicked turn.

There are pauses in the musical that feel deflating, but never for too long. Most of the musical numbers feed the story well, and are pleasant, but none are particularly memorable. A comical number (Never Trust a Man Who Wears Yellow) featuring the Constable and his protege is reminiscent of "You're Timeless to Me" from Hairspray, and brings a spot of joy at just the right moment.

What's different, and really very lovely, is the final moments of the story, told through dance alone, which is haunting, beautiful, joyous, and sad - largely the point - but allows the audience to just absorb into the story.

The musical is well stages, although some of the prop movements are distracting if only because the folks moving things about can be seen, throughout numbers. But the stage plays its own role, and does it very well.

This is a very nice, family oriented musical, worth a trip to the alliance to see. Marvel at the musical maturity of Lewis, who is worth the price of admission alone.

Re: “This is Market: Lettuce Turnip The Beet

The food I sampled was very good, and it was nice to see such a variety of food and farm vendors in one location. Gaia Gardens is indeed a lovely spot. $45 is a bit steep for non-wine drinkers like me, but then again it was a fundraiser. The rain and drizzle did not keep the crowd away. I took photos which you can view here:…

Great behind-the-scenes look at a great band. All it's missing is Kris Kristofferson...but it's way better than those things, anyway.
