Re: “The Village Corner: German Restaurant & Bakery

My husband and I ate at the Village Corner Restaurant and Bakery on 11/1/2014 around 8pm. We have been there many times to eat as it has been one of our favorite places to go whenever we had a little extra money to treat ourselves. We ordered our food, ate, and paid our ticket when it was time to leave. We are a young married couple expecting our second child due in a few weeks. Before we left I decided to order cake to take home. While ordering cake at the front of the store my husband was approached by an angry manager telling him that we only left an $00.80 tip and that she was "pissed". Once I saw the woman becoming agitated and angry with my husband by her body language, I approached her and asked her what was the problem. She explained to me that whenever we eat there we do not tip so "we don't need to eat there if we can't afford it." I explained to the woman that I was 9 months pregnant and we are very tight on money at the moment. She answered back by saying "Well then why are you buying cake then?" The extra money we had to buy cake was given to me by my mother who wanted us to order cake before leaving. I told her that paying a tip was not a part of the law and once again we left what we could. She then gets very angry and goes to the back to call someone else. Then comes out a man who doesn't even listen to our situation, he just starts waving us out of the door. While my husband and I are trying to explain to him what is going on without raising our voices, cursing, or being rude, the man has a very aggressive attitude towards us. He called me ignorant as well as many other down grading names simply for not having enough money to leave a tip. He also kept looking at my husband telling him "get her out of here" and "don't bring her out in public because she doesn't know how to behave" and "be a man and control her". I am a young black woman married to a young white man. And we both could tell why this man was directing all his anger and hate on me and not my husband, even though the both of us were not being rude or disrespectful. Then the woman (manager) comes back out and tells us that we need to go outside. I tell her that I am 9 months pregnant and it is 40 degrees outside, we paid for our food, and we are waiting for our ride that would be there in 20 minutes. We were not about to sit out in the cold and wait. She said she would call the cops. We told her to call them then because we did nothing wrong. She gets angry once she sees we are not leaving and goes to the back to call someone to rough handle us out of the door. Out comes a man from the back. I begin trying to explain to him what is happening and the woman (manager) gets angry that the man is actually trying to listen to my situation and tells him to go back to the back. A few minutes later my step father comes in and ask the manager and the other man what is going on? They don't try to explain, they simply tell him "get these people out of here". At this point the police officer arrives and we step outside and begin explaining the situation. The police officer says it was too cold out there to stand out and talk, that we would go back in the restaurant and speak. Note, it is too cold for a police officer to stand outside for 5 minutes. Yet, they wanted a 9 month pregnant woman to stand outside for 20 minutes because she couldn't afford a tip. He questioned us about the situation and went to talk to the manager. When he came back he said he could tell by the managers voice and body language what this was all about and that he apologized for the situation. He told us the best thing to do was never eat there again and get with a lawyer to file a discrimination report.I am reaching out to as many people who can help me share my story.

Re: “Fred's Place

The comment about the older woman is true (except the missing teeth). However, I think she does it in good fun to past the time away and to keep the customers laughing. I've been going to this place for 4 years and have not yet experienced rudness from the staff, but professionalism as far as fast food go. They are clean, as mentioned wear hair nets and gloves regularly while making orders, and the line and utensils are always wiped down. The food is really good. I haven't yet to see any salivating going on nor flies. If you ever work in fast food; you should know that during breakfast or lunch the crowd can be overwhelming and you have to do something to past the time away. In the older woman case, it's joking which could be taken as being a smart a** if you don't have a sense of humor. Treat her like family and she'll love you for life.

When you do what you love age doesn't or shouldn't matter. People are capable of being retired and deciding to follow their passion, which is beautiful right. We have persons younger than they are working for Fulton County that are medically sick - however the bills or their needs still need considering, and their dreams doesn't die due to it.

Fred is the sweetest man/business owner ever and his rough around the edges teams' personality balance the work place. I'd rather have older women working in the kitchen that knows what they are doing than having young ones whom barely knows anything or if at all- in the kitchen. Especially with the new generation coming up. Nevertheless, I would advise for them to hire two (younger) cashiers to be placed to tackle the waiting time.

Hats off to Fred's Place - you might have to wait, but 'day getter done'.

Re: “Grant Central Pizza - Grant Park

Try this Corn Continental pizza which incorporates lots of Indian spices while still staying true to the concept of Italian pizza.Tandoori Pizza is an exciting way of preparation and presentation. It really melts your mouth just looking at it.

Re: “Fred's Place

In response to the incident on 10/3/14, I was one of the customer's waiting in the line. There is only one cashier and their is a high volume of calls, whether it's breakfast or lunch. Phone orders are put on the line the same time as with in-person orders. There is no seperate register to pick up orders from. Patron's must wait in the line like everyone else to get their order. One cannot walk up to the counter, before another customer and ask to pick up their order. What if the order wasn't ready? The person would still have to wait.

Fred's is a popular place and is known to having a line of customers. As far as the attitude of the cashier, after observing her for a few weeks, I've come to realize that she isn't "mean" but instead, is overwhelmed, managing the front counter by herself and can only do so much while being pulled in different directions. Yes, she's elderly, as well as the other employees, but they cannot help that at their age they are working instead of being retired. I'm sure they wish they could be other places instead of working in a restaurant managing hundreds of calls a day; customers and working over a hot stove.

The restaurant has a health rating score of an "A". I've seen all the employees wear their signature blue latex gloves, while handling and preparing the food. Not to mention the black hair nets. I have yet to see any flies or saliva come from their mouths while talking, which they do while helping get the food out as fast as possible, calling out orders. I didn't overhear what Fred himself was saying to the lady, as she walked around to the back of the kitchen area, but at the end, I heard Fred himself apologize for the long wait time and asking her to please wait in line.

I think it would be in the best interest of the cashier to let callers know that their will be a wait time for their food, instead of them finding that out when they come in to pick up their orders. As far as the food itself is concerned, for lunch, I've only liked their string beans. I'm also very picky about food, especially "Soul Food". But their breakfast food is very good. I get the "Breakfast Special" or one of their sandwhiches. All in all, its how you talk to people. To get irrate and cause a scene telling the owner, "I'm going to post a bad review about you!", while talking about the owner and the staff standing at the front counter before storming off, will not get one anywhere. Next time, suck it up and wait in line like everyone else.

Strangely, no one else was complaining about the line and their wait.....

Re: “Fred's Place

On 10/3/14 I called in a pick up order. I was hung up on by the old angry black woman who answered in the phone in the midst of my order. When I arrived at the restaurant there was a line as long as the sidewalk. The old angry black woman keeps an attitude, thereby giving bad customer service to all patrons. I attempted to speak to the owner Fred about his bad practices andn his response was "well don't order from here". Now I noticed that not one cook was wearing a hair net or gloves. All the servers and cooks are older ladies, over age 65, who cannot partially see, hear or speak. They are missing teeth, causing saliva to fly on consumers food. Everyone talks with an attitude. There are flies swarming inside the cooking area. We have a business that is the only one like it in downtown Atlanta and the service is bad as well as the unkempt employees who serve.

Re: “Costa Verde

Fantastic ceviche and other seafood like the fried mixed seafood called jalea. Lomo Saltado is beef stir fry on top of French fries and super tasty. Service is very sweet and pretty efficient. Highly recommend the beef heart appetizer as well. Not organ-y at all, just super intense beef flavor.

Re: “Jerry Farber's Side Door

Jerry Farber's Sidedoor needs a consistent lineup. The acts that appear are almost never what is advertised on the website and nearly always a disappointment. Jerry Farber's Sidedoor should suspend their cover charge or better yet, operating as an entertainment venue.

When is Abdullah there? I've been a few times & the food is just so so. The only other reason I'd go back would be to see him.

Re: “Bartaco

The drinks were good, but it seems they forgot to adjust their expensive CT/NY prices for Atlanta, GA. $48 bucks for a carafe (much smaller than a pitcher) of the house margarita is ridiculous. Tacos were okay, but nothing to write home about. It was an experience, but I likely won't be making a second trip.

Re: “Java Lords

Java Lords is about as local as it gets and they have awesome coffee - they roast their own beans and have a good selection of single-origin organics.

Eclectic crowd with a significant lean toward theater, music and arts folk - very open and inviting unless you try to pick a fight or are bothering other customers.

The actual space could probably use a little bit of a facelift but it is comfortable and quiet during the day to do work. The vibe really depends on the bartender because whomever is on duty is in charge of the music but they're typically accommodating too.

Re: “Thai Heaven

This was my first time trying this place out and it will also be my last. I came in a little after 8pm on a Wednesday night to place a small take out order for 2. Upon entering I was impressed by the atmosphere of the place. Good thing as I got to enjoy it for about five minutes before anyone acknowledged me. I stated that I was placing a take-out order and was given a menu. I sat near the door and looked around a bit more and noticed the place empty other than a party of maybe 15. They were just casually talking having already placed their orders.

This is a large place with room for many, many others so this shouldn't be too big a problem. I look the menu over for some time and make my decisions. I go to the front desk again and wait... again. Another nearly ten minutes this time for the same hostess to ask if I am ready. I order an appetizer, a soup, and two entrees. I then take a seat at the bar to wait for my food. as I do I see servers begin to bring out food to the party of 15. Time passes as I wait and a few other guys come in and sit at the bar. they are greeted and asked if they would like to order.

A couple comes in and is taken to a both. Its been about 20 minutes now and no more food is going to the large table. The three guys at the bar now have their drinks and one has his food order. I continue to wait at the bar. Not being asked if I would even like a drink while I wait. It's been about 35 minutes now and another group of 10 or so comes in to ask to eat outside. Arrangements are made with tables on the patio and they are led to their chairs. I manage to make eye contact with the hostess that took my order some 40 minutes ago and she says that they are just waiting on my order of salmon.

I think that a piece of fish shouldn't take too long to cook and continue to wait. And wait. And wait. Another 20 goes by and finally at round about the hour mark from when I placed my order the hostess returns with my order. At this point I am frustrated, tired of being here and being ignored, hungry, and just want to go. I pay and leave.

After a short less than ten minute drive home I open my bag to find even more disappointment. The Singapore noodles look and taste almost as good as what I normally get from a local Chinese take out, only at three times the price here. The Thai basil rolls are spectacularly bland. The honey salmon is overcooked (seriously?) which was attempted to be covered up by drowning it in sauce. It also came with about a small ice cream scoop of overcooked white rice. And my Tom Yum soup.... no where to be seen. So, I decide to give them a call and speak to a manager to let them know that they really messed things up tonight. My career deals directly with restaurants and I know they need to know when this sort of thing happens.

So I call and the phone rings about five times and goes to a voicemail that is full and hangs up on me. I call again and on the third ring the a man picks up. I ask if I can speak with the manager on duty and am told to hold. The hostess now comes on and asks if she can help. I restate that I am looking for a manager and she says that one is not there. So, I ask if anyone is in charge and may I speak to them. She says that she guesses that might be the next in charge. Rather than waste any more time I ask when someone actually in charge will be in and am told to call back in an hour. Abou to make that call now.

So, unless you enjoy such horrible service, take-out level food at three times the price I recommend that you do not patron this establishment.
