Re: “‘Key and Peele’ leap into action in ‘Keanu’

Did anyone really think a comedic biopic about the guy from The Matrix would be funny or successful?

Re: “Nina Simone’s beautiful struggle overshadowed by white gaze

Maybe the film would have been received better had they left off the darkening makeup for Zoë Saldana and just let her be the actress she is. She might have been comfortable enough to give a better performance.

"Nina Simone was sometimes titled “the high priestess of soul”, although she completely rejected the title herself, because it placed a label on her as an artist."

I look forward to the eventual biopic on Zoe Saldana that centers on how she was heavily criticized for having the wrong skin tone.

Re: “‘Quarter Life’ finds the funny in being single working millennial in Atlanta

This sounds a lot like that web series on Myspace/NBC back in 2008. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarterlife

I loved this series and was sad when it ended. Can't wait to see their version.

Slacker stereotype? We work more hours, have more college debt, and earn less money than any previous generation, and for the first time in this country are projected to be worse off in our lives than the previous generation.

The pair started an Indiegogo campaign to fund the project....ah, I miss the good ole days when if someone wanted to do something, start a business, etc, they had to use their own money, get a second or third job, get a loan, steal from mom and dad, etc.

Re: “'Dope' moves: Shameik Moore blasts off from Atlanta

I recently saw this movie, really good, almost great, and loved the performance by the lead, Shameik Moore. Its nice to find out that this is a case of local boy, excuse me PC police, young man, makes good. Hope he becomes a big star and has a long career.

Re: “Georgia's blank check to Hollywood

Since the tax credit is transferable it is a little more complicated that 70% of nothing. The 30% tax credit is sold to any third party having a Georgia tax liabilty. Some amount of the tax lost is recovered in taxing the money that is spent. The owning entity gets a tax credit but not the recipients. By the way the tax credits sell at 90% of face value the 10% goes to local legal and financial brokers who sell these contracts who are in turn taxed. If you leave it at that then the state is losing money and this where the 18 cents in the dollar studies come in to play. This ignores all the economic effects that flow from that simplistic starting point.

What is the economic benefit of building 8 production studios? These are long term real estate and employment investments who pay real estate, payroll and other taxes to their local governments. None of these businesses benefit directly from the tax credit which is given exclusively to production companies.

What is the impact of catering, equipment rental, and other support businesses who are entirely local and pay taxes which have no direct benefit of the tax subsidy?

What is the benefit to thousands of production crew members from carpenters and lighting technitians to script supervisors. IATSE (the local stage hands union) employment is up by some astounding amount.

What if this tax credit, not unlike the "subsidies" that state of Georgia bestows on Gergia Tech results in a native, local and permanent film industry not unlike the high tech innovative comapnies forming around the Tech campus in Midtown? Is this a misuse of tax money? I am not an economist, I don't acknowledge that that the tax credit is a net money loser.

Even if I am wrong on the picayune debate of net tax revenue, what is the brand value or goodwill generated by having this interesting industry a vital part of our state and city?

If one local aspiring actor, director, cinematographer gets an opportunity that would have not just passed him by, but never occurred to him or her, would this not qualify as good use of tax money. If this was a discussion of subsidizing the Arts would you be so bent out of shape?

Finally, the tax credit is a great success, an overwhelming succes. If nothing else we don't have to watch movies set in the eastern US filmed in the brown desert environs of LA.
