Old ass thread, but I'll bite. I've eaten at many of Atlanta's most esteemed restaurants and I also put out a lot of good food in my own kitchen, so I know good from bad. Over the years Longhorn's has been a reliably good source for comfort food and gigantic portions whenever I find my way into one, almost always with my folks when I visit them in small town NW Georgia, to whom it is considered fine dining.
If you stick to the more popular entrees (steak, salmon, chicken dish, etc..) it's usually as good as similar items at quite a few respected Atlanta independents, though not necessarily much cheaper. It's not inventive or exciting cuisine, or described with rarefied flourish on a menu printed 2 hours ago, but it's usually highly satisfying for what it is. I typically enjoy reading your reviews Cliff, but this one definitely confirms your inveterate snobbery.
My wife & I go to the Sparks, NV Outback every Sunday before we got to gamble penny slots at Western Village.
We have been going like this for 10 yrs., We're on a first name basis with most of the staff and the proprietor. Everything we get is prepared to perfection or they'll change it. Mostly Filet, Rib-eye, Prime Rib with "Aussie Chips".
Great Vibe, Great food. We have been to some Outbacks out-of-town and haven't found some of them as good.
Even though it's a franchise, there can be quite a variation in food prep - staff - depending on the proprietor of the particular franchise..

Wow, the commentary on this argument is so incoherent and lacking a true understanding of how back-and-forth, intellectual discussions can actually make meaning that I can see CB planting his hand in his face over and over. Paula Deen should be given credit for being truthful under oath. A least 90% of people in the south over the age of 40, both black and white, have used the n-word at least once in their life. This doesn't make it right, just the truth. I know a lot of people will respond with "I've never used the n-word" but how many of them have used God's name in vain which some people find even more offensive. For goodness sakes, its not like she murdered somebody or molested a child.
I think this is one more example of Bostock going off the deep end, and comparing women running households as "enslaved in the kitchen". This is an insult to slaves, women, cooks, meal providers, and Household chiefs the world over.
Anyone who cooks knows it is a task done for love - for rarely does the compensation equal the time consumption. Even Bostock knows compensation in the food business is lousy from the top to the bottom(feeders (critics)).
Next we are going to be blaming the Braves moving on the suburb dwellers who are tired of bringing their "earned" money back into the city to only get robbed and carjacked. Ooops... that's right - they already are blaming it on the white man.
scrimm, I think you are overreacting. I think Bostock is talking about Paula Deen and how looking at her through several lenses adds to the discussion. I don't think there's any question that southern cooking owes slave cooking and African cooking at least a small debt whether practiced by rich or poor. Your revolutionary war family heritage almost certainly got you a couple of things from Great Britain or Europe. Do you begrudge that too?
I resent the fact this article insinuates that every white woman got her cooking skills and recipes from a black maid hidden away in the kitchen. I come from a family I can trace back to revolutionary times and I can tell you this, there was no black woman in our kitchens. We were white families that worked hard, took care if ourselves and owned no one. The less fortunate white families ate and cook just like the black families. I learned everything I know about cooking from my grandmother, and I have passed all this knowledge down to my daughters and son. Yes son. I have written down all the old family recipes for them and for their children, my grandmothers fried pies and cocoanut cake, corn bread (without sugar in it ) fried okra and chicken without all that heavy breading you see so often. Collard greens and black eyed peas cooked with ham hock were a staple in our household, and came right out of our garden. Some evenings my grandfather had nothing more than a glass of cold buttermilk and a hunk of cornbread for his dinner. So don't lump all white people in one classification. We were not all born into wealth.
Stop in at Mother (447 Edgewood) ... awesome, high quality bar food, including a lamb burger to die for. Great drinks, too!
@AtlPeach: I did include Circa in my original column, but it was cut to fit the space. It was the right choice, since I haven't eaten there in a long time. I did call it the best of the bunch on the west stretch of Edgewood. I also noted its high price.
