This stuff is not as clear-cut as you make it out to be.
Did you guys even read the story? or are you utterly dense? Clearly, "bitter" refers to Patterson Hood's "duality of the southern thing," i.e. loving a place and its people but still being critical of many aspects of the culture, e.g. the still-pervading racism, ignorance, and stupidity of would-be neo-Confederates. Is it really all that difficult to understand?

Not a fan of his type of artwork/craftsmanship in the size of a mural but t-shirts and paintings work. He probably made a killing selling those paintings in BK...to those hipsters and brand nubians. Nothing like being a "different" black artist to market yourself...
Sam Flax does donate some materials, and they receive a small thank you in LW press materials for it— along side a couple dozen other local businesses.
To my knowledge, LW has received zero dollars of tax money in the form of grants or any other payment.
I don't know about flax's relationship with the OCA, cant find any mention of it on the internets, but I can tell you that projects like livingwalls and dodekapus can't happen without the ardent support of people like Lionel.

@zedsmith- Maybe you should get sponsored by your local charter junior high school as you have poor reading comprehension skills. Hey moron, sponsoring also means donating materials, which is done in exchange for marketing and advertising purposes and to increase revenue of the sponsor. That you are A-OK with one of the directors of a so-called non-profit who works directly with an Atlanta government agency (this time in the guise of "cultural affairs") and who receive tax funded grants also benefiting his personal business thanks to this endeavor shows your lack of understanding of ethics. I am personally not comfortable with this and makes me doubt the sincerity of a program like Living Walls. Don't get me wrong, artists, art workers, and business owners have every right to profit handsomely, but using your position on the board of directors at an arts non-profit to covertly benefit your for-profit business is kinda tacky. This is just a small issue within all of the ones I see with the LW "concepts." Shit like this is the same reason why an organization like Eyedrum is in the skids. Receiving a 10,000 grant and there's nothing to show for it, and their credibility is lost, thanks in no small part to the idiots seating on the board who use their position to benefit themselves, stroke the ego of the alcoholism addled Woody Cornell and creating drama instead of creating a credible art programming. This is where I see LW heading in the future.
sponsors actually means they spend money, not receive money— maybe you should look into getting sponsored by merriam-webster.

Hey man, people in this town will throw fundraisers and donate to the cause of private for-profit businesses all the time, so why would this be a surprise? One of the sponsors for the event? Sam Flax, purveyors of the famous Montana aerosol spray favored by street artists both genuine and wannabes around the nation. Guess who is one of the directors of this years LW?

Kind of sad that Martin Luther King's family blocked the use of MLK's image in these timely, appropriate, respectful, and well-done murals that were put up in his old neighborhood. Just sad.

So I fucking get it now. Living Walls, a "non-profit," has commissioned yet another mural portraying black folk and their struggles to be pasted on a decrepit and blighted black neighborhood, all while receiving money from the black run Atlanta gov't. And of course, it has to be the most pandering images, something to satisfy the powers to be- "hey here's some more photocopied wheat-pasted images of people marching with THE KING, you know that dude whose image and name is represented in every single block of the ghettoest parts of Atlanta. See we care bout them communities. We can't fix tha streets but we sho can shell out some benjamins in order for LW to spread the propaganda fo us!" I love it.
