Re: “Residents, preservationists facepalm over Engineer's Bookstore demolition plan

The main point is not whether the building is significantly historic or not, but rather that demolishing it in favor of a gas station would be a crime.

Re: “Residents, preservationists facepalm over Engineer's Bookstore demolition plan

When I first moved to Atlanta in 1994 and lived in the Artery, having the original buildings intact hugely informed my thinking about history and continue to have an influence today. I’m writing to object to the demolition of the Engineer’s Bookstore at 748 Marietta Street NW, Atlanta, Georgia 30318 in Fulton to make way for a common gas station and convenience store.

This demolition would be a devastating insult to future generations understanding of the historic industrial energies of Atlanta’s past by irreversibly detracting visually from a distinct, vibrant, well-cared for and prized historic building fabric. The east side of Marietta Street in the 1960s -1980s has already been devastated by Georgia Tech Expansion, but at that time there was scant knowledge of the irreplaceable value that respected and well documented older buildings in a historic fabric add to a city. A gas station at this location would 100% overturn the huge energy and investment by the Marietta Street Artery Association into this area over the past two decades. This important neighborhood vision is an urban community of adaptively re-used former industrial buildings, and appropriately designed new structures, with a focus on developing for a pedestrian and bicycle scale that weaves sustainably into downtown. Neighborhood planning projects include:
 Upper Westside LCI Update, 2009: Change zoning to meet planned future land use
 Connect Atlanta, 2009: Marietta Street is a core bicycle connection
 Cycle Atlanta Corridor E, 2015: Marietta Street is a core bicycle connection
 PATH Foundation Tech Parkway Greenway, 2016: under construction

Not only would the community lose an amazing storefront with decades of character and history, and a recognized building within a National Register Historic District, but a gas-station is an incompatible use within the planned corridor and could easily be relocated with no harm done.
Please help us preserve this historically and visually important building!

Re: “First Slice 7/24/16: Buckhead condo hi-rise skirts water and sewer bills, resident says

""It says something profound about the state of our nation — and our fair city of Atlanta — that no one trusted actual residents and community members to ask questions. The event was so tightly scripted that no one — including us — was allowed to ask questions."

And it never occurred to VOX they were being used as part of a captive and silent audience so the sponsors could claim transparency? And it never occurred to them to stand up and ask some questions?

"Why does an Atlanta police officer have to travel so far to receive counter-terrorism training? What exactly are they learning? And why Israel?"

Because the Israelis are the best in the world at counter-terrorism, and you had better hope the Atlanta police learned well.

Why should the rich pay for water and sewer in Atlanta? Isn't paying one's fair share only for us common folks?

Re: “Fulton officials to mull Central Atlanta Library renovation proposal

So $40-$55 million of taxpayer's money is to be spent to add more space to the already overbuilt Downtown commercial real estate market. In a few years this building will be sold at a loss, like Underground and the Civic Center. But that is not this Library Board's problem - they will just kick the can down the road to their successors.

Re: “Fulton officials to mull Central Atlanta Library renovation proposal

Ha, a library with very few "traditional library services"--great idea, if you are an architect. What about the people who pay for library services with their tax dollars?

I love the beautiful pictures of empty space, but this plan is a lot like the Monty Python "Architects Sketch" (http://www.montypython.net/scripts/archite…

'Mr. Wiggin: This is a 12-story block combining classical neo-Georgian features with the efficiency of modern techniques. The tenants arrive here and are carried along the corridor on a conveyor belt in extreme comfort, past murals depicting Mediterranean scenes, towards the rotating knives. The last twenty feet of the corridor are heavily soundproofed. The blood pours down these chutes and the mangled flesh slurps into these...
Client 1: Excuse me.
Mr. Wiggin: Yes?
Client 1: Did you say 'knives'?
Mr. Wiggin: Rotating knives, yes.
Client 2: Do I take it that you are proposing to slaughter our tenants?
Mr. Wiggin: ...Does that not fit in with your plans?
Client 1: Not really. We asked for a simple block of flats.
Mr. Wiggin: Oh. I hadn't fully divined your attitude towards the tenants. You see I mainly design slaughter houses.
Clients: Ah.
Mr. Wiggin: Pity.
Clients: Yes.'

Re: “More than 10,000 Atlantans peacefully protested police misconduct, racial injustice

I think it would be great if the bloods and crips stopped killing each other, they got that part right. Blaming the police though.... well, I'm no fan of police state mercenaries enforcing code (color of law) and non-violent offenses for profit, nor for the whole for profit prison practice (because I have a soul), but statistically, race does not seem to be the issue, it's about power.

If a Roman centurion is aggressed in anyway by a commoner/colonni/serfus said prole can expect the lash if not an instant death sentence from a minion of caesar. The royal guard then and now are synonymous in their almost complete unaccountability for abuse of power. Whether black or white (Look at Freddie Grey case)

Also, the BLM reeks of a controlled oppositional front, taking what would be a rallying point for unity (something the pharoh can't have) and inserting a divisive proposition of "systematic white racisim" while implying that anyone who doesn't agree has to now disprove their "inherent racism".

But notice, nothing the "leaders" of this latest fad sjw crusade can withstand the least bit of intellectual scrutiny of their positions. If you take away the chanting, the posturing, the riots, nothing they are saying hasn't been said by organized opponents of police abuse (cop block) they just insist on the so-called "black" perspective (the manufactured one that denies conservative blacks a voice)
dominate the discussion and that anyone questioning this tactic just doesn't "get it."

Cue infantile regurgitation of logically inconsistent platitudes, like insisting someone who states "all lives matter" is in fact presenting a "racist" position, itself a candid revelation of the lack of basic reasoning at the foundation of this "movement."

Thus, while it's important people rally together to overcome abusive systems, if they are pointed in the wrong direction (George Soros) they cannot hope to achieve much systemic change, but do serve to further polarize the body politic during an election year (no coincidence) and prevent fellow $lave$ from recognizing their shared plight.

Soliloquy over.

"The rear section of these floors was conceived of by Breuer as shear volume for the many books and periodicals that libraries needed in 1980."

The ADC should change their spelling of "sheer".

Re: “Fulton officials to mull Central Atlanta Library renovation proposal

Hmm, there seems to be a distinct lack of emphasis on providing books and other reading materials. I know that it has become difficult for many young people to complete research assignments in the metro area. Some parents spend a lot of money on rapid book shipment from Amazon. I have been privy to many conversations wherein parents fervently wished local libraries provided more K-12 non-fiction books.

I get that empty "flex space" is cheaper than bookshelves and books, but bleh - it does not appeal to me.

On the other hand, the proposed design does seem to go a long way toward making the library seem more inviting and less like a survival bunker. The first time I entered this library, back sometime between 1989 and 1991, I was unable to resist comparing it to the three libraries in my hometown and was mildly appalled by how unattractive and how unfriendly to users it was.

I do like the idea of off-setting costs of operating the library with a restaurant and gift shop. I'd just rather the funds go to additional books rather than off-setting the costs of "flex space." Maybe the gift shop will sell books? If so, I suggest pairing toys with children books in gift sets, that is, a Madeline doll with a Madeline book, a Curious George stuffed animal with a Curious George book, or plush duck with Jez Alborough's Duck in Truck as that will likely increase revenue.

There was a billboard about that! Nah, not interested but a farmer's daughter scenario, that's got possibilities....

"you cannot have watched that man in action last night and not envisioned Eastern European Strongmen of the Cold War and the fascist leaders of Word War II"

But I did you see. Your reaction is kneejerk. To the left, there is no left...there is only the center, which is them, and the far right. Anything to the right of amiable Bushes and McConnell's just causes palpitations in the heart for indoctrinated lefties. It's like genteel Southern ladies turning red and fluttering their fans and looking heavenward. Hair Boy is not at all subtle but he's far from fascist.

"That man is dangerous"

You want dangerous? That's Ma Barker. Her incompetence and dishonesty way outweigh his alpha frat-boy assertiveness.

Oydave... I have found insight and thoughtfulness in many of your comments throughout the years, but you cannot have watched that man in action last night and not envisioned Eastern European Strongmen of the Cold War and the fascist leaders of Word War II. His demeanor, his smugness, his fear mongering... That man is dangerous.

Obvious here that "historic" is a means to an end, fending off a gas station. It cheapens the legitimate need for preservation.
