Re: “Jimmy Carter: 'We must do everything we can to discourage marijuana use'

"We must do everything we can to discourage marijuana use, as we do now with tobacco and excessive drinking."

We don't discourage tobacco and alcohol use by making them illegal...you know, since they're both legal. Society makes the assumption that free adults can decide to partake in these things responsibly. If they can't -- there are various legal and personal consequences.

The fact that marijuana (unarguably less destructive than either of the aforementioned items) is illegal is just the frosting on the nonsense cake. Carter is way off base here. But then again, he's old and therefore stupid.

Re: “City Council President Ceasar Mitchell to field questions about Atlanta crime on Twitter

Since it's an election year, how many candidates are gonna be robbed at gunpoint?

Last time around it was Ceasar, Julie, and Kasim.

Given the problems they've had this year, I'd put my money on Cleata and H. Lamar.

How does Ceaser have time for a Twitter conversation considering that he seems to at a Ceaser fundraiser every day of the weeK?

Re: “City workers to potentially get $2.8 million in pay raises

Sleeping cats,

The powers that be were afraid of demographic changes several years ago. That's one of the reasons the unincorporated section of Fulton County that abutted SW Atlanta was annexed into the city.

Without those new voters (and without the "questionable" votes) Reed doesn't win in '09.

Hell, even with that he only won by 700 votes in a 60% black city.

Re: “Atlanta to install free WiFi in Piedmont and Grant Parks, possibly expand Internet coverage to some neighborhoods

Provide free wifi by off setting some costs with advertising. Make users enter an email address so sponsors can send ads via email. Its annoying, but free wifi is better and spam blockers work.

"What a coincidence that the President went to Arthur's place for his fundraiser yesterday."

between the two of them, that's a lot of unfulfilled promise/unfulfilled promises.

Re: “Atlanta to install free WiFi in Piedmont and Grant Parks, possibly expand Internet coverage to some neighborhoods

Free wi-fi in public spaces is one of many things a city can do to provide access for those who can't afford to have an unlimited data plan on their device. Or for some, a data plan at all. And there are thousands of people on nice days who spend the entire day at the park reading etc... It's not about not being able to have wi-fi while you go for a walk.

Atlanta had almost 500k people(496,973) when the Falcons came to town. Now it has 420k (420,003). Seems like the Falcons drove some people out of town.

Re: “Jimmy Carter: 'We must do everything we can to discourage marijuana use'

if by "discourage", carter meant "legalize, regulate and tax most marijuana smoking", then i agree.

did CL writers ever start that cute animal tumblr?

if that ship has sailed, may i suggest a tumblr blog that focuses on crime stories involving ridiculous names. BJ VAN GUNDY is a good start but i think we can do better.

Re: “First Slice 5/17/13: Whistleblower sues mayor for alleged conflict of interest

Blank will get at least $500mm of hotel tax, capitalized over the term of the new deal, BB. Don't worry about the city picking up some future bill. We've picked up an enormous bill for Arthur already instead of doing something useful with that tax.
And those sales taxes you're debating are coming right from us: it's not Arthur's money and it's not new money. It's 8% of our pocket money, which we'd have spent on other entertainment if we had not gone to the stadium. Just irrelevant to the costs and benefits of the Arthur giveaway.
What a coincidence that the President went to Arthur's place for his fundraiser yesterday.

Re: “City workers to potentially get $2.8 million in pay raises

Reed must be feeling vulnerable to start handing out cash to the bottom feeders of the city workforce. Or worried that his coattails are mighty short for whomever is chosen from the Jackson machine to follow him into the mayor's seat. Are the changes in city demographics finally starting to cause a ripple (ie, no longer a black city) -?

Has anyone gotten wind yet as to what the 53 positions in the Mayor's office are for? Who's the next gadfly to be bought off? More folks on ABOE to give Reed control of APS (a la Bev Hall)? Has Max Blau made the grade yet? How many girlfriends does the man have anyways?

Re: “First Slice 5/17/13: Whistleblower sues mayor for alleged conflict of interest

"You people need to leave the Falcons alone. Atlanta had barely a million people when the Falcons came to town. Now we have close to six million. It's because of great leaders like Arthur Blank that there even is an Atlanta. Men like him deserve our thanks. And if he asks for a few dollars in return for making this backwater into an international city, that's a good investment for us. What are you all going to do when he finally gets sick of your complaining and moves to another city? Without men like Arthur Blank, Atlanta would shrivel up into the nothing it use to be."

Re: “Protesters blast state's higher-ed policies limiting undocumented students' access to college

Over 70% of "iliegal alliens" from Mexico are Natime American Indians I find it ironic when us Whites want to deport them for crossing boundaries in their own traditional territories.

I get a kick out of these arguments, "undocumented", had their parents entered the country through proper channels, they would have documents.

As to the person who said "our stupid immigration laws", why stupid, because they don't allow people to cheat and skip to the front of the line? I ironic is that Mexico's immigrations law are much tougher than ours, and have no mercy for cheaters.

As for the Racist term being thrown around, give me a break, someone is racist because they expect a certain group to follow the same laws as everyone else?

Given all that, I agree that something needs to be done about the pickle we have gotten ourselves into, we now have millions of people who cheated the system that we need to integrate into the mainstream. Most of the Mexican people are good hard working family people just trying to improve their lot in life, I work with many who would make great citizens!

Document and legalize existing people, YES, instant citizenship, NO. Then stop the flow and make future immigrants follow the/a system.
