Re: “Have rising rents pushed Atlanta housing into 'crisis' mode?

@ onelove
"...everybody deserves to make decent money..."
Says who, and where is it said? For example, the Declaration of Independence guarantees "the pursuit of happiness", not happiness.

"Jobs are scarce..."
I agree, and lower skill/lower wage jobs will become more scarce in the future as workplace automation increases. For an example, look at the automobile industry.

"We're always gonna need someone to do the low level jobs that no one else wants to do..."
Or a machine that doesn't complain, doesn't demand more pay, doesn't agitate for a union, and takes no time off.

Re: “Have rising rents pushed Atlanta housing into 'crisis' mode?

Why is it that every time an article related to housing prices runs, a bunch of people complain about the luxury high rises that keep getting built? Have you never heard of supply and demand? Nothing will improve housing affordability more that expansion in supply. The reason San Francisco and New York are outrageously expensive is because it is very hard to build new housing. Atlanta has a huge supply of undeveloped or underdeveloped property. It should be doing everything it can to encourage its development. Inclusionary zoning, tax credit housing, and other subsidies will not get you there. You need more supply.

Re: “Have rising rents pushed Atlanta housing into 'crisis' mode?

To the ppl who are judging Ms. Clemons we don't know her situation of what caused her to be evicted. Secondly, I've been living in ATL for 7 yrs now & have not seen any change as far as wage increase. Higher education is NOT the answer for everybody & everybody deserves to make decent money. Jobs are scarce so pretty much ppl just take what they can get which is sad. ATL caters to rich & middle class ppl & basically says f*** everyone else. That's not fair, or right!! We need to make changes ASAP. We're always gonna need someone to do the low level jobs that no one else wants to do, I'm not gonna look down on someone bc of that.

Re: “Open Door Community, Ponce's long-running haven for Atlanta's homeless, is closing next year

Every homeless person I've seen the past few years has a cellphone, actually.
And if you also don't realize that the homeless spend a lot of time in public libraries, then you're not paying attention.

Sounds like you're just trolling at this point. Sorry that your friends at Open Door are moving on, but trying directing your anger toward something productive. I'm not the cause of your problems, so cursing at me isn't going to do anything but raise your blood pressure.

Re: “Open Door Community, Ponce's long-running haven for Atlanta's homeless, is closing next year

Ok, let me get this straight... A shelter that's actually done GOOD for the homeless is shutting down next year, but Pine, an exploitative cesspool, STILL isn't closed?? Good God, what a loss.

Re: “Open Door Community, Ponce's long-running haven for Atlanta's homeless, is closing next year

"We" didn't establish anything. I mean they don't have a smartphone. Keep up, love. Your comments were condescending, appalling, actually. "Don't want to be bothered" is laughable. This article is about a valued, much-needed shelter and its loss is not a good sign for anyone in the City who might fall on hard times. And to say anything negative on the subject says a great deal about you. Get well soon.

Re: “Open Door Community, Ponce's long-running haven for Atlanta's homeless, is closing next year

Relax, lady.

The homeless in my neighborhood know there are programs available, but for the most part, they don't want to be bothered.

Anyway, we've already established that the homeless camp out at the library on Ponce, on Jackson Street, downtown, etc. You act like they don't know what Google is. Kind of condescending, but whatever.

You jack-ass. Thanks, I'll pass that on to Atlanta's homeless. Just Google it! Can we all pitch in and help Wesley find some much-needed assistance? I've got Google up and ready to go!

Re: “Have rising rents pushed Atlanta housing into 'crisis' mode?

As an adult she made a decision to make $7.25 an hr.As an adult she should not be working a job that was actually designed for teenagers. It's clear then, she has no other experience and she appears to be over 30. She's also fighting for 15.00 working at a fast food restaurant, instead trying to do better. So in all she still making a decision not to better herself. If your making 7.25 one job is not going to cut it. Plan your life better. ATLANTA is not expensive. The jobs are low wage to people who have no education, no experience. You get what your worth. It's simple. Her life is a direct reflection of her actions.

Re: “Have rising rents pushed Atlanta housing into 'crisis' mode?

Affordable housing is a complicated issue and I certainly do not have all of the answers. However, I do wish this article clarified a couple items better:

1. Evictions take time. Average time for an eviction is roughly a month. Though I feel for anyone caught in this situation, they did have plenty of notice before finding their belongings on the street. This is only the last resort for a landlord, after rent is late and multiple notices/court hearings are filed.

2. The state of Georgia does help to subsidize private developers to construct low income housing with income/rent thresholds. However, the number of projects is limited due to budgeting constraints.

Ah. That's what I figured. You sad fool. I know much about these resources of which you attempt to speak. They're severely lacking. As you are in the intelligence department. Let me guess, GOP fan?

@ rico from Tampico
"My guess is that Clemons is the woman pictured on the right, identified in the caption as "speaking," not the woman in the red shirt "holding the bullhorn."

My guess is the same as yours, but both women are generously proportioned. They haven't been short of beans and 'taters for some time.
