JANUARY 21, 2012, 9:37 P.M., HILTON HOTEL, COLUMBIA, S.C.: Thinking that Newt Gingrich might win the South Carolina primary, I got in my car and drove like mad to Columbia. The Hilton’s Palmetto State Ballroom was packed so tight you could not breathe — it was the hottest I’ve ever been. I was rewarded with this image of a sweaty, devilish Newt Gingrich at the podium delivering his victory speech. Afterward, I could not find where I parked my car for more than an hour.
"He is going to save America," said 78-year-old Barbara Marks while waiting for Gingrich to take the stage in a scorching hot ballroom
