JUNE 11, 2012, 8:54 P.M., ATLANTA BELTLINE: This image was shot for the “Our Favorite Places” issue. One of my favorite places in Atlanta is this swing on Three Tree Hill on the Beltline just as you cross over North Avenue, headed south. The plan was to make it up the hill just as the sun was setting to capture the skyline and a person’s swinging silhouette against one of Atlanta’s vibrant orange-pink summer sunsets. Lily Chambers, my trusty model/assistant/stylist/sister, agreed to be in the photo. I figured out an exact time we should get there, knew exactly when the sun set, and told her to be ON TIME, in capital letters, as older brothers are allowed to do. Unfortunately, she was not, but we sped away from my house, anyway, thinking we’d still make it in time for a bit of the sunset. As we drove, I saw the neon-pink cloud streaking the orange sky, gradating into an airy, light blue. That was the sky I wanted, the one I imagined for the photo. My heart sank, I knew it would be gone, but we still had a photo to make. I’ll never know what that sky could have been, and I think that’s OK. If we had made it for the sunset, I probably wouldn’t have stayed to explore the dark, dusky blues that glow just before night.
Spots secluded and well-known where we're reminded of Atlanta's charm
