I just moved back to Atlanta from San Francisco. While I am impressed with some of the developments the city has made in my absence like Atlantic Station, I am very disappointed that MARTA has actually gotten worse!!!!! It's nothing to spend 20 minutes waiting on a train in the middle of the day. Some of the stations are falling apart. I think the author of this article hit it on the nose: MARTA sucks because most of the people who depend on MARTA are poor, black, and do not have other choices for transportation and the law makers dont care because theyre too busy kissing the asses of cronies who are not so afflicted. It is soooooooo different here than in SF where most people (black, white, poor, affluent, whatever) use SOME form of public transporation for SOME reason from time to time. Right now I live near West Lake station. I ride MARTA from time to time. I laughed when I read about the young lady in the article who waits to catch a bus to a location a mile and a half away. I love to walk, my time is precious and I am very impatient so yes, I will walk through the sketchy area near the station just to avoid waiting for a bus. I do find it interesting, however, that the bus service in Buckhead is excellent. And they even have a free shuttle service (The Buc) which drops off and picks up at many office locations and Lenox and Buckhead stations M-F. How ironic is it that??? I would urge the young lady in the article to write to her councilpeople and urge them to erect sidewalks so that she does not have to walk in the street with the cars. There are so many areas without sidewalks here and I find it even more imbecilic and uncivilized that a metropolis as big and rich as Atlanta could be built without sidewalks than knowing it has a transit system as poor as MARTA. MARTA definitely needs an overhaul. Atlanta needs more sidewalks. No wonder folks are so fricking fat here!
