Re: “The year in art and theater

I appreciated reading Curt Holman and Felicia Feaster's top ten picks for 2007 but question how either can represent them as "top" picks rather than "favorites" without having seen all plays or exhibits presented during that period. I know they didn't see every play or exhibit. The lack of explanation troubled me.

I was a journalist for ten years and confess that it's a sad but true fact that many readers believe words printed in ink are gospel. I have no doubt Curt and Felicia penned lists representing the best amongst those each viewed during the year, but I saw many of those listed and others that I considered to be much better.

Differences in opinion make for a healthy community, provided those who read or hear about our differences understand that our opinions are subjective, especially when one or more of us may have been exposed to more or different art or plays than the other(s).

If, as is often the case, another staff member wrote the headlines, shame on you for not making clear that Curt and Felicia view innumerable exhibits and productions each year and can only pick from those they have seen. Even I can accept their choices as "best" based on that criterion.

Artists struggle for recognition. Just because a critic doesn't see their work doesn't mean they weren't/aren't among the best, even based on objective criteria.
