Re: “Forrest Hill Academy: The children left behind

Once again the buck is being passed. Alternative School by definition includes something different than whence you came. There are many reasons that students land at CEP. Not all the students land there for the same reason. The teachers as is the case at any school go to college to learn how to manage a class room. This is known as class room management. It is a skill. The expeceted enviroment does not include becoming an expert at behavior modification. However when a teacher is confronted with an array of negative behaviors in the class room, non of which they are experts at dealing with, the majority of their class room time is spent dealing with those behaviors. So if a student attends class hungry, without a good nights sleep, physically dirty, suffering from ADD or some other condition requiring therapy and or medication, from a recently broken home or watching his mother being abused by a strange man or their father, wondering whether they will even see home when the day is finished, it is very difficult to impress upon them the value of academic acheivement. Yes there are some teachers who don't meet the MQs academically, but those same teachers are the ones who deal daily with conflict management. Who keep them safe. Who consistantly defuse situations. Keep in mind that these students are all special and come from special homes. Parents who are recently released from incarceration, elderly grandparents shouldered with the responsibility of dealing with a hurting child. Most of the students come to CEP with academic deficiencies and very low self esteem crying out to someone to put them in their right grade. Realizing the effects of the mistake or mistakes they have made. Some come with psychological issues uncharted by the schools from whence they came. How long then will it take for the staff at CEP to locate the individual student's real problem? On occasion I have interviewed a student brought to me at 0750 hours under the influence of marijuana. What is the process for dealing with a situation of this sort? Suspension? Where will he go. No one is at home. The contact numbers have been disconnected, the alternative number is incorrect. Send him to an alternative school? He is already in that situation. Counsel him, not while he is under the influence. There is some parental issues needing to be addressed. But hold on. CEP is a "for-profit" organization where attendance generates revenue. This is like asking teachers to reduce the number of principal referrals by 30 per cent. Sounds good but what is the alternative? In school suspension. Imagine that, ISS in an alternative school. At any rate it is true there should not be a savings in money. Spend it because special students need special treatment and special treatment is expensive. I witnessed a student slap a male teacher and receive 3 days suspension because attendance generates revenue. Now you know why I don't work there. Had it been me, I probably would not have handled it according to "handle with care". The parents have failed, APS has failed and so has the church. I seriously do not believe that the "Alternative students" really want to be alternative students. There is no vision. How can I expect a student to tell me what it will be like for them 15 years from now if they have not been taught how it could be 15 years from now. They have little or no options and they are certainly leaning to their own understanding. I COULD ADMINISTRATE THE WHOLE PROCESS AND EVERYONE WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY. I HAVE NO ALTERIOR MOTIVES AND IF I COULD PLAY THE PIANO WELL, I WOULD PLAY FOR MY CHURCH AT NO COST AND STILL BE A MINISTER OF MUSIC. So here we are talking about a law suit so someone can get paid and the students will still be left behind. Why can't we hold the parents responsible for teaching their children how to act before kindergarten? Why can't students be held accountable for their actions? If you don't bring a weapon or contraband to school we won't have to search. If you are interested in making it back to regular school then follow the rules. You should not be allowed to continue the same behavior at CEP tha got you into CEP. Dicipline and or correction should be swift and to the point. In the beginning. right now. Zero tolerance. Remember someone attempted to burn the school down, and at one time was breaking out at least 5 windows per day in the old building. That is why the new building looks like a prison. If you don't like it, then goal set to get out and position yourself back at the home school. Sets some long and short range goals that are measurable so progress can be realized. That is why it is so hard to lose weight. It appears that it takes so long to get started.
It can be fixed but not by the government, nor the school system nor the parents. But by a collective effort with everybody on the same page. Can we talK?
