If you have lived in or around the metro area in the last 10 years you have seen the influx of people moving in, and seen traffic get significantly worse. This is happening ITP and OTP. Sometimes we forget that continuing to build infrastructure that makes driving the simplest, cheapest, most convenient option is going to result in worse and worse traffic – stultifying, paralyzing, business-killing traffic. Would you drive from Alpharetta to the airport at 4:30 on a Friday afternoon? At some point drivers might change their minds and consider taking a train, or riding a bike, but by then it’s likely too late – they won’t have the option available. Or worse, I’m wrong, and business and people have moved elsewhere and traffic is no longer a problem.
Think of the traffic in international cities, especially those where transit is not a viable option… when populations rise and everyone drives a car, traffic gets to be insane. Incomprehensible. Hours spent to travel a few miles. Sao Paulo has the largest fleet of helicopters in the world (and a scarily high number of helicopter accidents), because anyone who can afford it will fly over the congestion. This is a scary path we are on.
Traffic is bad and getting worse. We should fix it while we have the option.
"Imagine making that maneuver while riding a bicycle with kids." There's the kicker for me. A couple of years ago riding in the street with car traffic was my norm; now, with a toddler on a bike seat, it's mildly terrifying. Clear bike lanes make a huge difference in letting us get around (and "ride carpool") without adding a car to traffic. Thanks for this, Rebecca and CL.
Not crazy about the fact that, starting this week, I've seen the event being referred to as the "Inaugural" Krog Masquerade. Sigh.
I'd like to clarify the issue of access to the neighborhood. Taking the midtown example: 10th street being closed to cars is a pain. Totally agree. But one block up from 10th street is 9th. And one block up from that is 8th. Krog tunnel being closed to cars is a pain, and will cause a traffic headache, but I agree that it isn't the end of the world.
HOWEVER, if you are on foot, standing at Krog and Dekalb, and need to get to the other side of that bridge, it's a 1.2 mile walk to the Boulevard tunnel, to Rheinhardt, Carroll St, and up Tenelle to Wylie. If you're in a wheelchair or pushing a stroller, you have to go up the street a bit to avoid the stairs in Boulevard, and are rolling a total of 1.4 miles just to cross the tracks.
The next closest crossing point is the Inman-Reynoldstown MARTA station, which adds 1.8 miles to your walk.
It's really, really annoying to have to drive a couple miles out of your way to get home, but a totally different issue when you remember that not everyone is in a car - part of the reason we live in these neighborhoods is to be able to walk and bike places.
@Houses - There's more to a place than infrastructure. The neighbors make the neighborhood quirky. There are lame yuppies like me coexisting with a lot more interesting people. Stained glass artists and old codgers and doctors and handymen and restaurant owners and a tiny Pentecostal church are my immediate neighbors. And we coexist relatively happily and we know and look out for each other. I think that's quirky, at least in Atlanta.
This is crappy news for c-town. I usually think donating money to a for-profit business is a terrible idea, but in this case I would throw in for the cause. Restaurants and salons in a neighborhood are great, but it's the little grocery stores like this one that make it walkable and livable. It's definitely a heart of our quirky and awesome neighborhood and a destination for people dropping by. And these are people I just want to root for!
Based on their facebook page, there is a "glimmer of hope" - fingers crossed.
