The need for the black community (or part of it) to continue to self-segregate themselves is outdated. There is NO need in 2013 to have a race-specific arts festival (or beauty Padget, or college fund... etc). You cannot demand to be seen as a human instead of a black human, and then self-segregate yourself when it's convenient to do so. Be part of the human race and stop zeroing in on skin color when it works, and blaming others for zeroing in on it when it doesn't work.
I like the idea of this, but will agree as I've worked in the food business - it'll only take ONE person to now follow the rules precisely to make a lot of people sick.. and the lawsuits will shut the event down before it gets a footing. So I would emphasize to the organizers to not only make sure the participants go through the food safety training, but also to give them a quick "refresher pep-talk" literally right before EVERY event, every week, etc. Good luck to them all.
My complaint about the streetcar is the route planning. It goes nowhere except the MLK Center. It completely bypasses three major downtown hotels, doesn't even consider the Zoo, and stops only on the very edge of Centennial Park, two full walking blocks from the Aquarium (not exactly convenient for elderly or handicapped riders, or those with kids in tow, etc).
It doesn't seem to be a practical system in the first segment at all - it seems to be a personal train for the King family venues and nothing else. A more well thought out route would have gained much more support.
As long as City leadership continues down the same path it has for the last 2+ decades, very little intelligent planning is going to come out of City Hall. The multi-mode station was/is an excellent idea that no one has really jumped on for many years - and eventually it will be too late. Remember this during the next Mayoral election folks - it's more important to vote than take your pilates class that day.
People need to read ALL of the accounts of this story and watch all available videos before passing judgement.
Put them together: The women were acting obnoxiously and customers were complaining - iHop asked them to leave and they refused. iHop asked the cop(s) to get involved. He asked them to leave - they refused. They hunkered down in the booth and refused to leave, so he tried to pull her out. Another woman then interfered and started tugging at his shirt - he pushed her back - she then slapped him - he slapped her back - then she started punching him - and THEN he decked her. Other patrons have been interviewed on various news stations, and they all said the women were at fault.
I'm all for punishing "bad cops", but in this case, these "ladies" were just asking for a confrontation. Sorry.
There was recently an excellent show on the Travel Channel that highlighted transit systems, and they went over the MANY shortfalls of light rail as well as trolley type systems. People simply do not realize the sheer number of car accidents and pedestrians hit by these things until they see it condensed into a show like this - it happens a lot. You're basically sharing an existing automobile road with a moving train or large electric bus type vehicle - never a good idea, and the stats show it's not really that efficient, yet yield a high number of accidents.
While elevated monorail or people mover type systems are not as nostalgic as a trolley, they are much more efficient and safer than street cars. If anything, city leaders should be exploring these options. I can fully understand a slower-moving "tourist trolley" that would ferry tourists from the Centennial Park/Aquarium area, to Underground, and on to the Zoo and back again in a loop - that would be an "attraction" and actually draw people in. But as a serious mode of transit, Atlanta is just made the right way for street cars to work. Plain and simple.
To bobbysgarage's comment earlier about MARTA expanding North on 400: Just FYI... I once spoke to a MARA spokesperson as to why they had not done this - his response, "We (MARTA) don't feel it's needed there". Yes, really. It's not the people in that area that's the problem. MARTA actually doesn't feel an expansion North on 400 is "needed". Bright.
I really wish writers of all venues would stop using phrases like "up and coming" as well as "transitioning" and "destination", in place of what many of these places are if you more accurately describe them - "currently a shit-hole".
Sorry to be the one who pees on the cornflakes, but adding a couple of condos and restaurants does not turn a bad area into a good one - or even one that's "about to be good". I can think of a large handful of intown neighborhoods that resemble third-world Island Nations when you drive through them, and they haven't transitioned or become truly more desirable in the nearly 3 decades since I moved here.
One day perhaps we'll have City leadership and developers who will do large swaths of redevelopment in entire areas at once, and an enforcement of the vagrant laws. Until then, Sorry - no sale on Edgewood.
