The best thing tapes are for is making mixes. The art of the mix tape is a classic thing that cant be done in iTunes or another digital drag and drop application. planning the mix..writing out the tracks, listening to your mix in real time, etc. Tapes will sound better than a CD but nothing tops a clean record and a great needle.
I don't think tapes will return to mainstream again. No one wants to wait to fast forward or rewind (you can skip songs faster on a record!) CDs can scratch but tapes can easily twist, melt, and always seemed to wear out after a while.
One other good thing about tapes is at least it is a tangible thing. Simply not just another file on your computer. Its sad how so many kids of today dont really get the full experience of an album. They just download the files and drop them on their iPods.
Vinyl will be around for the long haul. They might just have to start making the covers out of something other than paper.
