One of the reasons for the "drought" of out-of-town artists who perform improvised music coming to Atlanta is the "drought" of performers of improvised music (homegrown) performing in Atlanta. There are very few good and accomplished local musicians consistently performing improvised music in Atlanta these days. Those who are touring are looking for towns that have a scene because that is where they will have folks coming to see shows.
People are playing in Athens because Killick has worked hard to nurture and maintain an improvised music scene where he plays a prominent role as a musician as well as a promoter. Public memory is short and there has to be a consistent presence of good musicians who will play the music no matter what, no matter where and tell everyone all the time if there is to be a "scene".
