I'm not saying I own anything like that or that I want to - I'm just saying where the limits of your 2nd Amendment rights lie. We're working to get to a point where you will be able to fully exercise those rights. Repeal of the GCA '68 and the NFA '34 would get us 99% of the way there as far as what particular types of weapons you may own. Carry is a whole other issue and I expect it to be resolved before the GCA and NFA are taken care of.

You have a right to own any weapon carried by a common soldier. This would include an M4 Carbine or M16 Rifle, an M9 pistol, and an M240 grenade launcher, or any weapon similar to those three. You probably also have the right to own an LMG. Heavy weapons are probably outside the scope of the 2nd amendment.

It is a civil right and it's why we're working to remove as many of those restrictions as possible. I for one will not be satisfied until you can carry a gun legally, openly on a tour of Gracie Mansion and you can buy a Glock in a blister pack in the checkout line at Publix.

2 - my point exactly, Lewis states "We are standing in the wake of the Newtown Massacre and the everyday occurrence of gun violence in too many American cities. I ask my Senate colleagues when will enough finally be enough?" The proposed legislation would have prevented Newtown how exactly?

Second, you haven answered my question. What do "universal background checks" do to prevent you from murdering your mother and stealing her guns (as Adam Lanza did)?

I heard Prof. Somin speak on the topic when I was in law school. That post from Prof. Volokh's blog is a good summary of the socialist aspects of nazi ideology. The National Socialists, Socialists, and Communists all hated capitalists. Hitler and Stalin had a lot more in common than most want to acknowledge. Hitler murdered 6,000,000 of primarily one ethnic group while Stalin murdered 20,000,000+ without regard to ethnicity - both were monsters.
