Re: “Atlanta's cycling community needs some help

As a former bike racer and survivor of more than a few auto impacts there's plenty of blame to go around. Cyclists need to obey the laws. Quit blowing through stop signs and red lights etc... Auto drivers need to have a bit more patience when encountering a cyclist. It may only take a few moments to get around them. That's not a lot to ask. Recognize that we are extremely exposed on the roads. Critical Mass events don't do anything to help the cyclist cause. All those events do is piss off people who we want to be friendly to us. I quit the intown evening group rides after seeing a friend run over. We were all to blame. Large groups of riders, rush hour traffic with auto drivers tired and trying to get home is a recipe for disaster. I found other, safer ways to train than to mix it up with sixty bikes blasting through city neighborhoods at 6 pm. Stay safe! Be courteous, arrive alive.
