Only in the most dire circumstances do I read reviews before I have finished a book. South of Broad is one such dire case. This is Pat Conroy for crying out loud! How could this novel possibly be as contrived, cliched, and over-written as it seems to me? And yet, it is. I was disappointed in Beach Music, but this is even worse. I must go back and reread Santini to get the taste of Broad out of my mouth.
