The key to Underground, and Downtown in general is simple: Georgia State University. Student life in downtown, over time, can have a monumental effect. There are numerous examples of urban universities growing and transforming their surroundings. One is Boston University and the districts it bridges from Kenmore Square to Allston.
What's the best thing the City could do right now? As the real estate market turns, continue to encourage residential redevelopment in Fairly-Poplar and South Downtown, and clean up Barbera Asher Square and 5 Points Marta in general.
A few decent dive bars wouldn't hurt either. Any way we can encourage 300 lb tatooed bouncers to settle in South Downtown?
It's 'Virginia-Highland' people. And get off my lawn.
This whole proposal makes a scary amount of sense...
Dang, Piedmont at Rock Springs is 'gritty' now?
Damned Liberals in Roswell.
Imagine the money that would get contributed to an incumbent Governor's campaign fund if he could appoint members to a board governing the airport! Imagine the political favors that would result in those appointments. In my mind it's a step backwards from today's model for the airport. Nevermind the state essentially stealing a valuable asset for the City of Atlanta's taxpayers for itself...
Re: “Underground Atlanta's future up for discussion - again”
I wouldn't hold my breath for a hash bar (see what I did there?) in Georgia anytime soon. We just recently got the ability to buy beer on Sundays, after 12:30 thank you.
