Re: “A Critic's Notebook: Some thoughts on Zuckerman

If I’m not going to accept knee-jerk reductive reasoning from a university president, then I’m certainly not going to accept it from an arts critic whose job is to expand dialogue, not cut it off. Instead, you are summarily dismissing what this publication was lauding as Atlanta’s “first new art museum in more than a decade” barely a week ago. (“Zuckerman Museum to open at KSU this weekend,” by Sarah Freeman, 2/25/14)

We may have won the battle, but the war is not over. Going forward there should be assurances put in place that the curatorial authority of the Zuckerman staff cannot be overturned again, so that the space does NOT continue to exist with the shadow of censorship over it. I agree with you about one thing: it is unacceptable that we should go forward with this being the case, and I don’t consider the matter settled until that changes.

But I disagree that the solution is to write off a major new arts institution. That’s incredibly short-sighted, and unfair to the curators and staff who work there and the artists who will show there (all of whom are part of our community). While attention is focused on this issue let’s instead also address that underlying problem. Encouraging everyone to turn their backs and focus elsewhere seems an irresponsible and intellectually lazy suggestion from someone who is ostensibly a supporter of the art community. We don’t have so much of an art scene here that we shouldn’t be willing to fight for what there is, and not just sit back and allow it to be stunted by our own disregard.

And I’m glad you thought our protest was lovely, but I can assure you that there was nothing degrading about it. I am proud to stand up for my community and exercise our power as citizens. Congratulations on making your own objections heard by staying home and not being heard. One can remain silent after all, it seems.
