Yes, Atlanta requires a car to get around, especially if you are here as a tourist wanting to see everything (Stone Mountain to the Aquarium) But, when have you ever gone to any city wanting to see it all and not rented a car? Boston is a great walkable city, but if you want to be a tourist and not see only the Freedom Trail, but surrounding points of interest (Concord to Gloucester) you will rent a car. San Fransico is a great walkable city, but if you want to see the redwoods or drive across the Goldengate Bridge, you rent a car. So what's the problem? Regional tourists drive their own cars here. Others fly in and rent a car.
To answer your friend's question "What would a great MLK celebration look like?" How about the 4th of July? Now that's a great celebration that draws nearly all Americans. Why? Because it is widely celebrated and it's fun. Here in Atlanta on the 4th we have the Road Race, neighborhood parades, baseball, and best of all fireworks. We should do the same for MLK. Will the meaning get lost in the hoopla? No. Have we forgotten the meaning of the 4th of july?
