I'm not sure this guy should be interviewing authors if he really thinks that any attempt at writing in the voice of another is by definition a failure. A white woman cannot write the thoughts of a black woman? Can an author not write people who are different than herself? By this criteria all writing beyond memoirs must fail by definition.

You may critique an author for creating unrealistic or inauthentic characters, but don't criticize her for creating and inhabiting people who are unlike herself. That is her job.
