At last! GOOD RIDDANCE! I never thought I'd live to see this day, but Tom Watson's statue has finally left the Georgia capitol.
Hallelujah! Bye bye, Tom Watson! Long overdue, like Leo Frank's posthumous pardon in 1986. But better late than never. Next step: Send Watson's statue back home to HICKORY HILL where he belongs, in Thomson.
I have also signed the petition at www.thomaswatsonmustgo.org. Yes, the Tom Watson statue should be removed from the Georgia capitol, but I do not believe in destroying it. The statue has a proper place at Hickory Hill, the restored Tom Watson mansion at the Watson-Brown Foundation in Thomson, GA, a private venue without government presence or sponsorhip. If Tom Watson's statue is relocated to Hickory Hill, I would respect those who wish to remember Watson to do so at that venue instead of the Georgia capitol in Atlanta. In other words, don't destroy the statue, just send Tom Watson back home to Hickory Hill where he belongs.
The 2013 centennial of the Leo Frank case and the 2015 centennial of his lynching are both approaching. The time has come to remove Tom Watson's statue from the Georgia capitol grounds and send him back home to Hickory Hill, where it properly belongs.
