Re: “Is organic food an elitist scam?

I am a foodie and I'm somewhat sympathetic to the argument for organic food. But I think a large element of consumer behavior on this point is a classic case of conspicuous consumption. We love to reward ourselves moral points for good behavior that takes little real courage or effort. So, I can make a better planet by spending some extra bucks on organic food. I'd rather pay less at a grubby, ethnic farmers market than spend big bucks at a glossy Whole Foods store.

Re: “Deliverance turns 40

Thanks for a wonderful write-up! Dickey's work was all about our hand-to-hand combat with death and the risk of it. He deighted in pissing people off and picking fights. While that might have been hard to deal with in real life (as his son's memoir testifies), it makes him a fascinating writer who just won't die.

Re: “Leave Ted Turner alone

I met Ted about seven years ago when we were both getting a cardio stress test at Emory. He was relaxed, polite and none of the things I thought he was going to be. The room was a mixed bunch and he didn't offend anybody. I thought the older, slowed down Ted was kind of nice and not the least bit pretentious for a billionaire.
