jaydoz, the part you are missing is that secession was not prohibitted in the constitution and was widely recognized, even in the north, as a state or group of states rights. in fact, a group of states in new england had earlier seriously contemplated secession but at no time were they threated with war to remain in the voluntary union. we are now an obligated union of republics(states) that have had most their powers transferred to the centralized govt. just rewrite the constitution and quit pretending we have a govt that guides itself by its priciples. lincoln trampled and tore up the constitution to win taxation without representation over the south. freeing the slaves had nothing to do with starting the civil war.
