Oh, I completely disagree with your dismissal of Irene's declaration of "I'm gay." It was simple and beautiful, an answer to John's ever open-ended "I'm not gay." It's the summary of their respective relationships with Sherlock: completely against their nature, so what are they doing there? There was a loud, unspoken "And yet look at us" hanging between them. It was one of the best one-two exchanges in the series, and this is with complete awareness of the Sherlock/Jim exchange of "People have died" - "That's what people DO" from series one, which is the single finest five minutes of television ever (IMHO).
