I remember in the months leading up to the games, the media attention surrounding the impact was pretty negative. The general message to residents was "pack your bags and go visit family out of town for two weeks, because there is literally no way that you can expect to live a normal life in the inevitable cluster fuck." Even as a 7th grader who loved sports, I got fooled into dreading the start of the Olympics. Luckily, we ignored all the warnings and stayed in town- and I can honestly say that the Olympics were one of the most fun and exciting experiences of my childhood. I really can't wait to take a two week vacation next time the games are held in a city where I've got friends with an open couch.
