Rumors that you heard from other volunteers while you were "working" for the bid are not necessarily true. Others hate Los Angeles and Atlanta? Well, maybe Atlanta, because it was a no-name city (unknown outside the US) whose Olympics were a cheesy disaster, and the US shouldn't have gotten another summer Olympics so soon after L.A. in 84. But no one hates Los Angeles 1984.
P.S. The costs of hosting an Olympics Games are far higher post-2000 than they were when Los Angeles and Atlanta hosted. Of New York had won the 2012 bid or if Chicago had won the 2016 bid, both cities would have had to spend public money. The Salt Lake winter Olympics in 2002 took federal money.
