Re: “Civics lesson

Thank you for this brilliant expose on ALEC, The GA Charter School Amendment and Our Legislators for Hire-it's high time this hidden agenda saw the light of day. A billionaire pre-fab home builder, a self-proclaimed 'venture philanthropist' flat out bought our public school system for fun and profit. He feels he can 'run it like a business'- an idea that may appeal to those that don't realize kids aren't widgets. His educational reform is built on a structure as solid as his pre-fab homes-the ones that exploded from faulty wiring.
Eventually, parents will see through the propaganda and manipulated data & realize that things are worse than ever. He and his posse will be run out by parents with pitchforks and torches, much like they have been in Minneapolis, Seattle, Providence, et al.
It's a shame so many are busy bad-mouthing teachers that they overlook the obvious: when communities struggle, so do public schools. They teach what comes through the door-poor, rich, abused in dysfunctional homes, latchkey kids, disabled...all of these microcosm-of-society issues must be dealt with along with the 3R's. Private schools have the luxury of excluding and removing those that don't better their image and test scores.
Our much-maligned teachers spend countless hours getting appropriate services for students- calling parents, DFACS, and community outreach programs on top of planning, teaching, and grading-dedicated to mending the only safety net many kids have. This charter model treats kids as data and teachers as chattel to be replaced with cheap interns.Teachers are not the problem, and this new charter system is definitely NOT the answer!
