Re: “At Applebee's, Jesus is jealous of your server's tip

"I hate the "auto-tip" addition. Usually I leave 25%, but with the auto-tip I just leave it at that (even when I have a 10 person bill and would like to leave an extra $20.00). It is like the company doesn't trust their employees to provide good service or their customers to act like civilized people."
Restaurants have the auto-tip policy to protect their employees and that is the only reason. Servers are responsible for "tipping out" support staff (bartenders, kitchen staff, food runners, bus boys) at the end of the night, usually about 5% of their sales for the night. The auto gratuity protects all of these employees. If your service was good tip extra!! In many cases the auto tip is company policy and is not used at the discretion of your server.
