Friday 11-29 & Saturday 11-30 mornings crews from Superior Rigging & Southway Rigging companies, under observance of 1/2 dozen minor state employees & a street guard of several Ga State Patrol officers, dismantled & moved the statue to it's new location.
Still, 47,000 pounds of memorial keeps Ga firmly anchored in the past.
FWIW, I'm belatedly aware that I referred to this statue as "Watkins" at the beginning of previous post. I'm as stumped as you as to why.
Passing the site again just an hour ago, all they've done so far is to slice out the cement around the base, so maybe NEXT month... ?
Good point abt making presumptions too early.
"but that same post also garnered 10 likes, for a net rating of 21 dislikes to date."
Indulge my last mention of this subject here (out of respect for the point of the overall commentary)
but that's an invalid math approach. No matter that X # of ppl, liked it, 31 ppl still felt the need to voice some kinda disagreement w/ that post...while still choosing to not say anything abt why.
I find that mystifying.
I thtink all the comments, memorials, etc, are over here:
Not to divert the thread too much but in regard to "like/dislike" indicators (mentioned earlier, w/ the unexpressed but clear idea that some haters were here), this post...
"Rathbun needs to pay attention to this..that much weight will kill you. I never met the woman, or ate her food, but I do follow the Atlanta food scene and saw her on Chopped. All respect to her and all that she accomplished. Hope the Bluebird continues to thrive.."
...garnered a stunning 31 dislikes !!
Do ppl want KR do kick it ? Are they against the idea of moderation ? WTF ? There haven't even been 31 posts here !
I won't address each comment here, good or bad (what's that cliche abt arguing w/an idiot...or even w/ someone who refuses to be swayed ?), other than to repeat what I posted in a related thread.
If modern Germany was as over-run w/ monuments to the "lost cause" of WW2 as the southern USA is w/ in regard to the USA Civil War, most ppl in the world would be in an uproar.
Heres what's wrong w/ thinking merely moving this statue to another location is an improvement, though: IT'S STILL GONNA BE A PUBLIC ENDORSEMENT OF HIM & THAT BACKWARD THINKING MINDSET, only now across the street.
I was premature w/ the post above. This morning, passing by the G Dome just before 10 AM, I arrived almost simultaneously w/CL photog Joeff D to see the unannounced (dare we say secretive ?) removal of Watkins's statue beginning.
No one in the public or local media knew of or was even able to find when this would occur.
Long overdue, of course, but might this be a shift in state policy to the ridiculous # of memorials to not just the history of the USA Civil War but, by the carefully worded statements on these memorials ?
[e.g., on Watsons's statue it cites his "unwavering support for THE CAUSE", albeit framed in way that suggests such cause is merely what's "right".]
Truth is, I doubt much significant change will happen til paintball protests render these over-romanticized memorials as embarrassingly stupid looking to tourists as they are to sensible residents.
Next question: where will this mucklehead's stature now be enshrined ?
