OK, as a white person, and the term is meaningless, I say there's no such thing as an actual white person. There are only different kinds of ethnic people who have light skin. The only reason we have a category of "white" in this country is because there's this fake nation-state monoculture the English colonials set up to make everybody look and act like them. But there are lots of ways to be white and lots of languages that are native to light-skinned people. All of which are ignored because for whatever stupid reason the skin color and the same bland stupid fake monocultural post-industrial social habits are more important.
The only reason blacks are treated as monolithic in this country is owing to their slave past which many of them cannot even retrace genealogically. You do not see recent African immigrants behaving as a racial monolith. Somalis hang out with Somalis, Ethiopians hang out with Ethiopians, etc. There is more to ethnicity than skin color.
Even among Latinos, if you pay attention, they tend to group by origin too. Mexicans with Mexicans, Puerto Ricans with Puerto Ricans, and on and on. There's some mixing back and forth but they're most comfortable with their own folks, the same way you'd be more comfortable hanging out with close relatives than in a room full of total strangers.
"White people" just means "light-skinned Westerners who forgot where they came from and are now wannabe Englishmen." And yes, that includes Americans. All that ranting about "we fought a war to not have to worry about a royal baby" but you act for all the world like you'd love to sing "God Save The Queen" again. You even want a return of the feudal system. This time without right of commons. Every non-English white group that has ever lived in this country has had the other language beaten out of them and made to act just as bland and stupid and pointless as this country's English colonial forebears. The ONLY thing we have going for us is the white skin. Upon that basis we think we're better than everyone else. But we disrespect our parents and grandparents and ancestors by spitting on everything they used to believe, think, and do. All in the name of fake power and fitting into the sheep herd.
People of color are not our problem. They never were. But for some reason we want to be their problem. So I don't blame them one bit for wanting their own little spaces on a college campus where they don't have to put up with our awkwardness and sometimes downright hate, 24 hours a day. Until you have been there, and I promise you haven't, there is no way you will understand. But YOU do not need the safe spaces. The entire world is your safe space, at least until you've pissed off enough people that you run out of places to control and places to hide. Rate you're going, that'll come sooner rather than later. Shame you have to drag the rest of us down with you.
