Goth-dance figureheads give Atlanta's indie scene a jolt of electricity
by Bobby Power
Much has changed since the goth-tinged synth-pop duo of Elise Tippins and Matt Weiner, aka Featureless Ghost, relocated its brand of retro-futuristic dance music from New York to Atlanta in May of 2010. The pair's three fruitful years spent releasing new music, touring, and curating events and parties helped unite a disparate scene of synth-obsessed artists.…

by Chad Radford
On Aug. 6, Atlanta grindcore trio Dead in the Dirt will release The Blind Hole, the group's debut for modern metal powerhouse Southern Lord, following 2011's "Fear" 7-inch. How an Atlanta music phenomenon reached the world
by Chad Radford
Since 2009, Adrian "Zone3" Sosebee's blog, the Freak Beat, has served as the chief conduit blasting post-dubstep and the distinctively Atlanta sounds of trap music to the world at large. From Heroes x Villains' genre-defining "trvpstvr" to Mayhem & Antiserum's "Brick Squad Anthem" to Debroka's "Grippa Bankroll," the Freak Beat has leaked the synth-laden 808 beat rattle and bass swells of every major trap track since long before most people knew it as anything other than a T.I. album title (Trap Muzik).…

Step into the gallery of horror
by Chad Radford
Nowhere does the art of the flier carry more weight than within the blackened realms of metal, grindcore, et al. The demonic fonts, ravaged skulls, and thick black filigree burn everything you need to know onto your brain on sight. From Spewtilator bassist/vocalist Ryan McGee's D.R.I. flier - the same hand that designed Sadistic Ritual's band logo - to Disfigurement frontman Nate Godbee's stark and hellish imagery, in metal, art imitates life.…

Power violence four-piece looks beyond house shows
by Bobby Moore
With a caustic mix of male and female screaming, and newer songs that dare to surpass the one-minute mark, Atlanta power violence four-piece Cheap Art is fast becoming a fixture on the national hardcore scene. Since forming in December of 2011, the group has made swift strides by doubling a lineup that began with guitarist Bryan Scherer and drummer Andrew Wilson (ex-Weather Underground), and in the process expanding its sound.…

Lead singer Will Fussell on VPI Harmony and the anatomy of a melancholy harmony
by Chad Radford
Two years have passed since Atlanta five-piece Mood Rings began assembling its debut album, VPI Harmony, out June 25 via Brooklyn indie label Mexican Summer. From the spectral resonance of "Charles Mansion" to the ethereal guitar and vocal textures of "Exorcised Painting" and "Minor Slaloms," the album is an 11-song odyssey through lush, sentimental highs and lows.…

Country songstress's originals sidle up with her heroes
by James Kelly
There are few greater joys than discovering something that's made for you, something that you are damn good at doing. Second-grade teacher and singer Julea Thomerson, 29, stumbled onto classic country music in her mid-20s, and immediately knew it was her calling.…

A jazz fixture becomes Atlanta's musical ambassador
by Omar Khalid
The Atlanta jazz scene has journeyed through plenty of changes over the past 15 years, from promoters such as Euphonic Productions to Sounds from the Underground; from the reliance upon actual word-of-mouth promotion to the more pervasive social media. But the spirit of jazz has always remained strong, due in part to the steady, unflinching presence of prolific saxophonist Kebbi Williams.…

DIY studio/live space thrives off the beaten path

The Cottage (1300 Skyhaven Road, 770-815-2084) sits at the end of an unassuming wooded driveway just around the corner from the bars and clubs of East Atlanta Village. Since the spring of 2011, lead engineer/producer Luciano Giarrano has managed the DIY studio/live space, keeping it independent of any one scene or genre despite its proximity to indie-centric neighborhoods such as EAV and Little Five Points.…

'U.O.E.N.O.' beat proves one man's controversy is another man's resume builder
by Rodney Carmichael
Childish Major has the right pseudonym for a producer whose studio essentials include Lay's Kettle Cooked jalapeño potato chips and cartoons. That air of mischief extends to his ear for quirky melodies and ominous beats.…

Nine-man ensemble's refined absurdities flourish on the fringe
by Bobby Power
Faun and a Pan Flute thrives in the gray areas that exist on the fringes of math rock, prog, and psychedelia. Depending on the night or studio session, Faun can go from roving gang of focused absurdists and high-minded mad geniuses to a band jamming out a tune.…

Rapper/singer fits in by being different
by Rodney Carmichael
One of the standout tracks on ForteBowie's Internet-approved EP — the seven-song Vice Haus, released earlier this year — is titled after the notorious Atlanta trap rapper known for spending more time in jail than he does on the charts. "Gucci Mane" is not an ode to the Mane himself, but a slick pun ForteBowie flips into an ego-bolstering metaphor after a former flame bruises his heart.…
