While this isn't the forum or topic to debate NPUs and their good or bad ways, the assertion that if it were not for them that there "would be a Pink Pony on every street corner and residential in-town neighborhoods would become extinct" is, to put it kindly, total malarkey.

And O4Ws last paragraph is why many despise these folks (and NPUs, community 'organizations', historic preservation groups, and the other zillions of local groups that are just more red-tape creators - the same red tape that causes Dynamic dish's of the world to close - but hey, we all fail to see that when we think we are doing the 'public good') that get a power trip being on a NPU with the "shut-up, we are arrogantly doing the public good" mentality without the ability to actually hear feedback from those they purport to represent.

To foodie2 and Chucky - I'm a part of NPU-M, which is where Dynamic Dish was located. We're the NPU for Downtown Castlebury and O4W, and I can tell you that first and foremost, we support almost every liquor license that comes before us, for two reasons: we know that most restaurants need the licence in order to have a viable business (revenue from liquor sales is CRUCIAL for most small restaurants) and, second, because we're tired of seeing shuttered streets like Edgewood and want to support those who are taking the plunge of opening a new business in this crazy economy.

In Atl, simply stating that "they" understand these are issues and are working on how to implement is not very comforting, especially if you are thinking about opening a business. And if you think that employers are not required to pay at the very least "a match" then you simply have not been paying attention.

The truth probably lies somewhere in between or depends on how powerful the individual NPU is.

I realize a world where we all had to choose "Big Government, EPA, FDA, higher taxes, and the bureaucractization of America" OR being true Obamacare-hating Tea Party Patriots is much simpler for a lot of people to understand (Red Team, Blue Team, Yay!). Luckily some folks can wrap their heads around a slightly more nuanced reality, where it's possible to both understand the need for taxes and regulation and desire them to be implemented in a practical manner.

This is the price you pay for the large government that left leaning people generally prefer.
