PistolPete-- 95% being repaid (and keep in mind some of it was repaid in 'debt' or stock, not cash, so 95% really is an inflated number... not to mention that giving out huge loans and getting back the same principal you put in without interest isnt really being 'paid back'--try to pull this at any bank) still puts the outstanding figure at about 1000x the funding that goes to the arts. Just to give you perspective.

Who’s to say what’s worth keeping and what’s not ? That’s easy to answer.

The property owners !

When the property owner pays for, or sanctions it, then its art — otherwise, its just vandalism and a crime. If graffiti is “art”, then assault and battery is acceptable behavior.

This "private sector horse" that you refer to... How much has government (we) paid in the last two years to keep that horse alive and well fed? What is the percentage of art funding compared to the bailouts for your beloved 'private sector horse'?

CapViewBliss - I disagree with the family concept you talk about because I have enough responsibility taking care of my family and would prefer as little responsibility for society as possible. I think we should all be responsible and respectful of ourselves first and foremost meaning you add to society and cost society as little as possible - that you are not a burden that criteria being met - then if you have any where with all to help others by all means do it on your own through charity, churchs, volunteer projects, etc...the Gov't takes enough of our dough and redistrubutes it as it is. If you think of the Government as your charitable contrubution by all means send them more of your money and even ear mark it's purpose if you please but by all means take as little of my stash of cash as possible.
Why not outsource the project to a private company - let's call them PaintAtlanta. Everyone's happy with how that's worked with parking.

Ignorant is as ignorant does look at matt he did drugs and died from them and the punk did not have any art skills .... all he knew about was being a vandal and a criminal who left us with awful scribbles and death skulls .....that put him in his grave ...... I wonder if matt has ever went to jail and it's true the tags you see in C-town, R-Town, East Atlanta, Inman Park, Little 5 Points, Grant Park ,4th Ward, and many other places in the city was done by the same gang matt AKA ohno was in . This gang is called F.I.D / Kaos Inc. look at the tags on the Wylie wall and around said neighborhoods you will see them . Look at vomet tags look at ohno tags look at steal tags look at mr.e tags its easy to read between the lines and see that they are a GANG . It's very easy to add 2+2 and get the right answer every time . R-Town needs to open their eyes and be a little informed about the tagger's living in their neighborhood .... jw your the old fart and maybe a tagger but you need to get the facts first before you start spewing your nonsense.... do you even live in the city of Atlanta ?

Although I can see how someone might disagree with me about the value of publicly funded art, I'm not sure I can understand why someone would find the very idea of publicly funded art offensive.
I don't agree with every book in the library.
