This is a very strange and unusual movie. So much of the beginning is simply beautiful and fantastic scenes of space or nature with whispered voices in the background.

If you found the movie "beautiful" and "affecting," I don't think you can call it pretentious, which -- in addition to not meaning what you seem to think it does -- is one of those words that's become so loaded as to have no meaning at all; loved by anti-intellectuals, its only effect is to end the conversation rather than propel or enrich it. That said, the thing that I love about Malick and his films are their sincerity -- their utter lack of pretension.

Not sure if you liked the Fountain by Darren Aronofsky, but it reminded me of that movie. I can see how it's not some peoples cup of tea.

I have thought deeply about challenging the idea that Malick is a good director. Every time I try to watch one of his films, it makes me think, this guy is a ham-handed half-smart dweeb who is all artifice and no substance.

He if he's your cup of tea, knock yourself out.
