The 1:4 statistic is accurate for genital herpes (typically hsv2) The other factor that a lot of people don't realize is that most people have herpes already, cold sores are herpes. And most of the population has hsv1 in their system from childhood.

      ^^
very good points raised— but wouldn't you agree that the 1/4 statistic is misleading if it doesn't describe the incidence of cases of actual, awful, dangerous, sores-all-over-your-privates herpes?

To me, its like telling people that flying in an airplane exposes them to elevated levels of radiation without the caveat that its pretty insignificant compared to even a medical x-ray, and nowhere near the amount of radiation that would be statistically associated with elevated incidence of cancer.

Actually, I can provide some information here: that percentage is true - it is just that a lot of people have asymptomatic cases of herpes.

When I lived in Africa several years ago and came down with an unexplained illness that made me run a fever for three months straight, I came home to the U.S. and saw my doctor. She ordered tests for just about every disease listed on the lab sheet (including leukemia, HIV, Hepatitis B and C, etc.), but to my suprise one of the few boxes that was unchecked was for herpes.

I love my girlfriend, and if she had herpes I'd still be with her, though I'll concede that I probably wouldn't initiate a relationship of any duration with someone who was upfront about an STI.
