I just debated the scenario you proposed this morning. There are lots of examples of "getting it right" the second time around.

This we're all gonna die and go to transportation hell if the thing doesn't pass is just plain crazy.

Each of these transit projects have vague descriptions intentionally. That is because there is not enough funding in any of them to construct them to completion.

And, as an Atlanta native, I've seen the city through any number of "solutions" to the traffic problem that seem to only have enabled more development and more people to travel the roads from further distances every day.

Until Atlanta becomes the place where you can actually live near the place you work, and have the amenities and quality schools one would expect from neighborhood living, Atlanta will continue to be a commuter nightmare.

At the very least there should be no regional referendum, the Legislature should do the constitutionally-mandated jobs that they were elected to do, put on their thinking caps (which have obviously both been missing-in-action and missing INACTION for quite sometime), turn on their often-inactive brains and do some actual WORK (something else that the Legislature hates to do) to come up with the REAL amount of money that it will actually take to modernize the Atlanta Region's increasingly antiquated transportation infrastructure where applicable to both roads and transit.

(To get an idea of how much that real amount of money that is needed for transportation infrastructure really is, think the current referendum proposal of $6-8 billion plus AT LEAST $50-60 billion more, and that's just for starters.)

The project description says the BRT will operate within a fixed guideway which is a term that is also used to describe HOV (carpool lanes) or HOT lanes with their own right-of-way that is separate from the general purpose lanes.

Since the state is planning to construct and operate at least one mostly-elevated HOT lane on I-20 East outside of I-285, one would have to assume that any increased bus service on I-20 would operate in the HOT lane that would likely change directions carrying traffic towards I-285 and Atlanta in the morning and carrying traffic away from I-285 and Atlanta in the afternoon and evening.
