      <![CDATA[Yes I agree the excess capacity and particularly having 3 through lanes in each direction have a much bigger impact on speeding. You've also convinced me that the net result of the median is improved pedestrian safety.

      <![CDATA[In Atl, you're right to be concerned about speeding, but the median is a much smaller factor than the number of lanes. Just as on West Peachtree Street, a one-way street with five lanes, excess capacity encourages speeding.

      <![CDATA[Thanks PEDS and Amen, its a travesty that even these plans to fix the most critical part of the highway. <br>
<br>
going to 4 lanes and having substantial turn lanes, which Monroe does NOT have would clearly make it operate far better than Monroe, not to mention Monroe as some odd intersections.

      <![CDATA[In Atl, when installed on roads with two-way center left turn lanes (TWLTL), raised medians increase safety dramatically for all road users. Due to the large number of driveways on Buford Highways, pedestrians standing in the TWLTL lane are at high risk for being hit by people turning into or out of driveways.

And I was looking at Buford Highway the other day in light of this project. If its going to take 2 years to build these sidewalks when do the sidewalks from the northern edge of this Project, just north of NE Plaza, to Clairmont and then Dresden get built?

      <![CDATA[Actually if they are putting a median in they could shrink the the continuous middle turn lane or suicide lane. And thus perhaps have room in the Right of Way for sidewalks.

As TW noted, there's probably not enough money in the fund to purchase the right of way from the various property owners for building sidewalks outside existing lanes. I think he's right that they're probably going to be taking away a lane to build sidewalks inside the current roadway by financial necessity.

This area absolutely needs sidewalks. This is probably the most heavily trafficked area of metro Atlanta with regards to pedestrians.
