Let's be absolutely clear: That number is 3:

* Charles Allen Drive/Parkway Drive
* Monroe Drive/Boulevard
* Briarcliff Road/Moreland Avenue

And following are the City of Atlanta streets that DON'T change their names when they cross Ponce de Leon:

* Spring Street
* West Peachtree Street
* Peachtree Street
* Juniper Street
* Piedmont Avenue
* Myrtle Street
* Penn Avenue
* Argonne Avenue
* Bonaventure Avenue
* Barnett Street
* North Highland Avenue

If we carry it farther east into the always-has-been-majority-white area of Atlanta-in-DeKalb, we get a similar ratio:

Change at Ponce:

* Lullwater Road/Fairview Road

DON'T change at Ponce:

* Springdale Road
* Oakdale Road
* Clifton Road

And that is an exhaustive list of the streets that cross Ponce de Leon Avenue.

Among the burdens of history that affect present-day Atlanta are (1) racism and (2) haphazard city planning. The street names, however, are only an example of the latter.

Atlanta certainly has a racist history -- but this oft-repeated explanation of the changes in street names is not a real example of it. The explanation sounds plausible because of modern demographics, but in the days of segregation, both sides of Ponce de Leon were lily-white.

When Boulevard was developed, for example, it was given a different name than Monroe Drive (which is contiguous with it on the other side of Ponce de Leon Avenue), even though both of those streets were populated exclusively by white families.

There are also many examples of streets with different names because thoroughfares that didn't line up originally were adjusted for efficiency -- but not renamed in the process of those adjustments.

It's so white people didn't have to live on the same street as black people back in the Jim Crow days.
