Feel like you've been holding back? Well, rest assured – college is the one place where you'll be able to find hordes of fellow students as strange as you. Below is a list of some of the more offbeat and outside the mainstream extracurricular activities and clubs offered by local schools.
Campus Freethinkers (Georgia Tech)
The Freethinkers declare themselves "atheists, agnostics, deists, freethinkers, and other irreligious members dedicated to promoting the ideals of scientific inquiry and secularism," and hold weekly discussion groups aimed at fostering debate ... which sounds suspiciously like what classes are for.
Medieval Combat Society (Emory)
If you need to let out some excess energy and aggression, there are worse ways to do it than with foam swords and bow-and-arrows. Plus, chain-mail is slimming. The weapons are made mostly from PVC covered in high-density foam that, even if it doesn't injure, produces a highly satisfying thwack; combatants stop using a limb after it's felled in "battle" and fight to the death (two "injuries"). What's not to like?
SCRABBLE Club (KSU)
Kennesaw State boasts one of the region's few collegiate competitive Scrabble societies, not only hosting matches between fellow students but also against other colleges. Students are encouraged to bring to the table good sportsmanship, a sense of community, confidence, strategic thinking skills, and an encyclopedic knowledge of two-letter words. If you join this club, you can expect to get to know the letter Q in ways you never thought possible.
The KSU Tellers are an experimental storytelling performance company that has toured internationally and regularly performs in the Atlanta area. Aside from being a fascinating extracurricular activity, participation in this group would provide optimal training for anyone planning to pursue a career as a Celtic druid.
Wreck Racing (Georgia Tech)
A group where students build street-legal race cars for the national annual Grassroots Motorsports Challenge, which combines the fun of go-kart racing with the work of actually building the car. Still, regardless of how one performs in the annual competition, it must feel pretty kick ass to race your handmade car around campus.
