This year marks what would have been the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 78th birthday, as well as the 21st anniversary of the national holiday named in his honor. In the seven days leading up to the holiday, the King Center, Hands on Atlanta and Delta Air Lines have organized a service summit around the theme "REMEMBER! CELEBRATE! ACT! A DAY ON ... NOT A DAY OFF," and packed it with events emphasizing King's message and encouraging activism. Among the highlights are a traditional freedom rally Sat., JAN. 13, featuring a handful of hip-hop legends including Kurtis Blow; the literary series "From Freedom Riders to Freedom Writers," Thurs.-Sun., JAN. 11-14, with authors Sonia Sanchez and Mari Evans among others; a lecture by Civil Rights activist Willy Leventhal on Sat., JAN. 13; bus tours of Atlanta's Civil Rights Movement landmarks; and a citywide volunteer day (right) with more than 50 opportunities to serve the community on Mon., JAN. 15. Freedom Bus Tours: $10. All other events: Free. Various times, dates and locations. See website or call for more info. 404-979-2800. www.handsonatlanta.org.
