A stitch in time

Special event

With a total weight of 54 tons, the AIDS quilt includes more than 45,000 panels created in remembrance of more than 88,000 people who have died as a result of AIDS. On World AIDS Day, celebrated DEC. 1, Emory Hillel sponsors QUILT ON THE QUAD, the nation's largest AIDS quilt (right) display. The event centers around a 650-panel section memorializing merely a fraction of the 25 million lost to the devastating epidemic. Dr. Jeffrey Lennox, a professor of medicine, infectious disease expert and the Ponce Center's medical director, speaks after a public reading of all the quilt's names. Panel-making and an HIV/AIDS information fair follow. Free. 11:20 a.m. Emory University, Clifton and North Decatur roads. 404-712-9063. www.emoryhillel.org/AIDSquilt.
