... and greenhouse gases are to blame ...

"Greenhouse gases are accumulating in Earth's atmosphere as a result of human activities."

The prevalent view that people are the cause of global warming has solidified over the last few years into a broad consensus. Naomi Oreskes, a historian of science at the University of California at San Diego, examined 928 research abstracts on global warming published in peer-reviewed scientific journals from 1993 to 2003. She wrote July 24 in the Los Angeles Times:

"Not a single paper ... refuted the consensus position, summarized by the National Academy of Sciences, that 'most of the observed warming of the last 50 years is likely to have been due to the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations.' "

By studying trapped air bubbles in ice-core samples from Greenland, scientists such as Georgia Tech climatologist Dr. Michael Bergin find it relatively easy to show that more carbon dioxide is concentrated in the atmosphere than at any time over at least the last 400,000 years:

"There's a direct correlation between temperature increases and CO2. They go up and down, up and down together for as long as we have ice-core records. It's pretty amazing."
