Athens loves a party. And last year, indie record moguls Mike Turner and Eric Hernandez threw a party that turned into a four-day festival. So how do ya top that? Hell, have a five-day party, that's how! Thus, Athens Popfest 2005 is upon us.
"Pop music is many things," says Turner. "It can be simple, as in popular music that you hear on the radio. Or it could be defined as music with catchy hooks, great melodies, and bouncy rhythms."
CL asked Turner, founder of Happy, Happy Birthday to Me Records, to suggest a few bands for discriminating Atlanta-based pop connoisseurs:
Tuesday -- Athens Music Museum, free rooftop show
Marshmallow Coast (4:15 p.m.): "Intricate jazz riffs, flute solos, and songs that toy with innocence and the loss of it."
Wednesday -- Little Kings
Cars Can Be Blue (6:30 p.m.): "Their songs are simple, cute, and somehow very perverted."
Thursday -- 40 Watt Club
Bunnygrunt (midnight), Tullycraft (1 a.m.): "Both play sweet pop music that some call twee, but leans more towards rock and punk in attitude and style."
Friday -- 40 Watt Club
Casper and the Cookies (11:15 p.m.): "Some of the most pleasing power pop your ears will ever hear."
The Marbles (midnight): "Robert Schneider's [Apples in Stereo] solo project."
Pylon (1 a.m.): "Athens royalty."
Saturday -- 40 Watt Club
Red Pony Clock (9:30 p.m.): "Psychedelic Dixieland chamber music from San Diego."
Elekibass (10:15 p.m.): "A Japanese band with their own take of the Elephant 6 sound."
Circulatory System (11:45 p.m.): "If you like the more trippy moments of Olivia Tremor Control, then this is for you."
Of Montreal (1 a.m.): "Their new dance direction has divided fans, but I feel has brought new life into the band, and they might have the best pop record released this year."
Athens Popfest 2005 is Tues.--Sat., Aug. 9-13, 3 p.m.--2 a.m. $10-$12 (one-day), $32 (three days), $40 (four days). 40 Watt Club, 249 W. Washington St., and Little Kings, corner of Hull and Hancock streets. www.hhbtm.com/popfest.

Yes, 14 is the correct answer. I'll pass your info along to the group's manager,…
That was January of 2007, and they are 21 now, so I'm guessing 14?
